Black History Month Spotlight: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Savannah chapter.

In light of Black History Month, I wanted to highlight a very important figure to the feminist movement. Mrs.Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a novelist known for her work on gender, race, politics, and culture.  One of her most popular books We should all be feminist is a book-length essay about the definition of feminism in today’s society.  Adichie has been writing for nineteen years publishing her first book in 2003 Purple Hibiscus. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is also known for speaking out against anti-LGBTQ laws in Africa, The war in Nigeria, and her lectures at several universities and Ted Talks.

Born on September 15, 1977, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was the fifth child out of six children.  Adichie attended Eastern Connecticut state university where she received her bachelor’s degree in political science. She also attended John Hopkins University and Yale University. Adichie received most of her writing inspiration from the Nigerian Civil war where her family lost almost everything and social issues that she has faced throughout her life. She has been the recipient of countless awards including The Commonwealth Writers award for her first book and The Woman’s prize for fiction. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie received more attention when her “We should all be Feminist” ted talk was sampled by Beyonce in “Flawless” in 2013.

I personally feel that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a great author because of how she tells the story within her books and a lot of her opinions align with mine. When it comes to things she feels passionate about she has no problem speaking out against them. I love how she uses her platform to talk about how women are treated differently socially and economically than men in today’s society. Equality has been a problem within society for a very long time and I like how she shines a light on the problem and uses her platform and talents to try and change it.
