Travel to Find Yourself: 5 Trips You Should Take To Discover More About You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

Traveling to a new place does not just give you a chance to take some pictures and get some sun.  It gives you the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture and find out more about yourself than you thought was possible.  It gives you the chance to have no regrets—to be so grateful you took this adventure.

Although it depends on the person and his/her individual experiences, here are 5 tips on where you can go to discover so much more about yourself!

Learn to love in Paris

It isn’t difficult to fall in love when you are in Paris.  Whether that be with the food, art, narrow cobblestone streets, or with someone, there is a reason why it is one of the most romantic cities around.  Don’t get caught up in following an hour-by-hour schedule.  Don’t let those little moments of love pass you by.  Enjoy where you travel and make the most of it.  Spend 30 minutes looking at one painting.  Buy three crepes in one day.  Let yourself take a moment to really see the city.  And I promise, you will leave in love.

Let go and tango in Argentina

When you travel, take a chance and learn something new.  Don’t be afraid that you will look silly or will do something wrong.  Let yourself be a part of the culture.  In Argentina, enjoy the music and dancing.  Let go of yourself, have fun and be confident.  When you take the time to relax and not worry about what other people think, you can be yourself.  And who knows—you may be one of the best Tango dancers out there!

Embrace fine art and food in Florence

Italy…*sigh*.   There are no other words sometimes to describe this place.  Travel all around the country, but make sure to stop in Florence.  Tap into your intellectual side and explore the art that can be found on every corner in this city.  Whether it is paintings, sculptures or buildings, see it all.  And, of course, do not forget about the food.  Calories do not count here.  Try different flavors of gelato, eat pasta and pizza nonstop, and enjoy a glass of wine.  Find a dish you have to go back and try again tomorrow.  Laugh with old and new friends over a meal.  Practice your Italian.  Have no regrets when you get back on that plane.

Be tranquil in Thailand

On trips we tend to go, go go, rather than take the time to stop.  Our brains are always thinking about what’s next rather than on what is happening right now.  Tap into your spiritual side on vacation.  In Thailand, take part in Buddhist rituals.  Close your eyes and let yourself feel the journey rather than just see it.  You may discover more about yourself than you would expect.

Make time for history in Munich

Munich is the perfect city to see a combination of the past and the present.  As you walk through the streets, you will be convinced that you have been teleported back to a different time.  Take a walking tour and you will be surprised at just how much history there is.  Stare up at the Glockenspiel.  Go buy some pretzel bread.  Visit a traditional beer hall.  Have fun and make yourself aware of this city’s past.  Who knows, it will probably make you want to go back in the future.
