As the semester starts to pick up and wind-down simultaneously, the need for relaxation increases as well. Not only does the stress of the semester start to weigh on our souls, the promise of a two-month long winter break also brings the need for something to take up our extra time in our winter lockdown. As I was browsing through Hulu, Nextflix, and Amazon Prime Video, I have been creating a long list of “must watch” movies that I plan to work through between studying and then over break. Here are a few movies and TV shows that I have found recently that caught my eye.

Amazon Prime

  • The Hunger Games Series (2012-2015)

    • All 4 movies are on Prime for your watching. They do have ads; however, these movies will definitely take up your time and bring you back to middle/high school when the books and movies first came out.

  • Midsommar (2019)

    • Even though I have not seen this one yet, I heard a lot of excitement surrounding it when it came out. We also STAN Florence Pugh.

  • The Hustle (2019)

    • Anne Hatheway is my muse, so this movie always brings me joy. I’ve watched it more times than I can count.

  • Vivarium (2020)

    • Holy cow this one put me through a loop. If you love a psychological thriller this is it.

Hulu

  • Shrill (2019)

    • This quirky TV show is full of humor and chaos as Annie tries to navigate through her newly found confidence. Perfect my college girl self who is just starting to navigate adulthood.

  • Parasite (2019)

    • This Academy Award for Best Picture is at the top of my list for movie marathon days over break.

  • Palm Springs (2020)

    • Andy Samberg never fails to put a smile on my face. Gotta love a groundhog day spoof.

  • Woke (2020)

    • Inspired by the life and work of artist Keith Knight, this comedy touches on serious issues surrounding race and culture using humor to talk about some important topics. Also it’s Lamorne Morris so it’s beautifully amusing.

  • Normal People (2020)

    • I know this is old news and trust me, I’ve already watched this show two times through. But this is on my list for most favorite romance dramas of all time, so I will be watching this and crying all over again shortly. If you haven’t see this yet, please do!

Netflix

  • The Queen’s Gambit (2020)

    • A chess queen breaking gender stereotypes… yes please!

  • Barbarians (2020)

    • Even though this one is in German, it is well worth it! A badass female warrior doing the absolute most is justification enough for me.

  • His House (2020)

    • I started watching this and it was too spooky to watch by myself, so I will b e reserving this for the daytime.

  • In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)

    • This one is a little old, but considering I binged it in one sitting, it’s good enough to do it again.

  • The Outpost (2020)

    • If you are into heart wrenching, true war stories that tug at the heartstrings, this is a must see! An amazing cast telling an amazing story.

Even though taking some time off is hard at the moment, taking some time off between studying and projects is something that all of us need from time to time. In these last few weeks, I hope that everyone stays strong and safe! Hopefully there are a few items on this list that everyone can enjoy!
