*PSA: My mom is a licensed beautician so if your decide to dye your hair, make sure you do plenty of research beforehand*

So, week 1.5 into quarantine I was strolling through Pinterest, as usual, and I was looking through my old “Hairstyles” board. I realized that I have wanted to dye my hair pink for the longest time, but I hadn’t committed to it because of school and work. As I was coming to realize that I would not be returning to school or work for a long time, I realized that this was the perfect opportunity to just go for it and dye my hair.

I texted my aunt who was a hairdresser for 40 years and I sent her the pictures I found on pinterest for her opinion. She recommended the Tressa Watercolor Intense Shampoo, which you can find on the Tressa Beauty website or on Walmart.com. This is a great option for those who are afraid of commitment because it is a shampoo that dyes your hair, so it is easy to remove the color quickly. I’ve also found that it is more hassle free than having to worry about the up-keep with normal dye colors. It is also relatively inexpensive to purchase (around $20) and very easy to use.

I chose the color Rose Gold because I wanted a pastel shade (they have every color under the sun), so it took a few days for the color to fully intensify because it is lighter. The shampoo does slightly color your natural hair, but the best way to see more intense color is to lighten your hair. I chose to highlight the ends of my hair with bleach and leave my natural roots because when I decide to remove the color, it will look like normal highlights. There are several professional videos on how to lighten your hair online, so please do your research before bleaching your hair!

*Another PSA: Start small. Do not dye the entirety of your hair initially; instead, lighten it little by little and every so many days you can add more highlights if you want more color*

My initial bleaching was very light and after a week I decided to lighten it again to add more highlights. Now, a week after my last highlighting, my hair is exactly the color I want. I LOVE IT!!! I would never have done this because I always found excuses in my normal routine, but because I’m at home and only my family sees it, it is perfect. Honestly, it gave me a confidence boost and made me feel like a badass. Now I want to keep it all summer and possibly longer. There are so many color options for the shampoo so it will be easy to change to another color if I decide to in a few weeks.

So, do I recommend that you dye your hair in quarantine?

Overall, I would definitely recommend this change in quarantine because it has given me an unexpected confidence boost. It added color to my life in these stresful times. I walk around the house feeling like a model and curl my hair simply for my Webex classes. This is also the perfect time to experiment and return it to normal before we all return to the public. This is also a cheap alternative to going to the hair salon and spending $100 or more. So if you want to dye your entire head of hair, color a few strips of hair, make a TikTok video or are having a breakdown in quarantine, just go for it because this is the perfect time and reason to try!
