How To Handle Finals Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

Thanksgiving break is over which means back to reality and finals week is just around the corner. It starts to set in that you really should have done at least a bit of homework and studying over break because now it’s hitting you hard and getting back into the groove just seems impossible. Now is the time to cram a semester’s worth of a class into a week but don’t stress, here are a few ways to rock it out.

1. Brain Fuel

They say you are what you eat and according to some, what you eat relates to brain development and helps you function. While studying have some snacks around like popcorn, banana/apple with peanut butter, granola bars, or trail mix.

2. Catch some Z’s

Sometimes there’s just not enough time in the day and we stress that an all-nighter is in the future, but it’s important to be getting enough sleep. Not getting enough sleep only hurts us in the end and emotions start to fly, so get some sleep, or take a quick power nap and get back at it when you wake up!

3. Make it fun

Who says studying and homework has to always be boring? Some learn better in different ways. Study with a group of friends who won’t distract you and break out the planner, bright highlighters and sticky notes. It’ll make you feel as if you have somewhat of your life together, I promise. If that’s not the case for you, then find a isolated quiet place and put your phone away and your chance of getting stuff done will probably increase.

4. Caffeine

If your caffeine addiction before finals week wasn’t already bad, now is the time where that all changes. Drinking coffee or energy drinks will help you wake up in the morning and give you that little boost we all need and make you feel like you can take on the world. Some coffee places even have nice quiet areas to do some work. I know if we all could have a IV of coffee going straight into us we would.

5. Take a breather

Sometimes we all just get caught up in school work and worry that if we don’t ace this one big exam then our life is over and we mine as well drop out now. Just remember stress isn’t your best friend and there’s always next time and one exam isn’t going to set your life back. If you’re feeling this way, take a walk, light a candle, listen to music, take a shower or bath, change the subject you’re working on, call your mom or dad, or even go make a trip to Whiteys down the road and unwind for a little and try again after.
