Halloween. The time of year when it is acceptable to go a little extreme with your outfit, hairstyle and makeup. But what if you want to get dressed up for that Halloween party you’ve been invited to but don’t have the money to buy an all out amazing costume? It’s time to get creative ladies, and this year, we did.

If you don’t want to spend the money or show the skin that retailers are asking you to, you don’t have to! Thanks to Pinterest and your own closets, you can find the perfect outift. Now, we know that Halloween is over, but this advice can be used for next year, or the next time you have to dress up. For Halloween, though, some girls got pretty creative and money smart.

Take Wanda, for example (she’s the girl version of Waldo, you know). She had the black framed glasses, the leggings and boots, but she needed a stripped shirt to make her outfit complete. A trip to the local mall found this shirt on the clearance rack at Ragstock for $10. The best part is, it can (and will) be used again come Christmas time!

See that girl in the poodle skirt? She made her costume. Yep, with the help of her mother, that creative collegiate bought the material and sewed the skirt so it would fit her that way she wanted. This way she could practice her seamstress skills, save money and not have to try to fit into a costume that a factory deemed worthy of selling.

If all the costumes at the Halloween store were showing a little too much skin for your comfort or the weather, putting together your own is the best option. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to find the pieces of your outfit in your own closet or be able to reuse what you buy later. If you bought a costume this year, or parts of one, we suggest keeping them; you never know when they will come in handy.

When you’re in college and on a budget, the best way to go is smart. Even though Halloween is over, more holidays are on the rise, so remember to stay smart, safe and savy.
