10 Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas that are Budget-Friendly

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

It is that time of the year that everyone starts to think about what to buy for Valentine’s Day. Whether you are spending Valentine’s Day with a significant other or having Galentine’s night with the girls, Valentine’s Day gifts are always exciting to give. A nice bouquet of arranged roses and chocolates are a classic, but that can be a little pricey. When it comes to showing some love and appreciation, you do not have to break the bank. There are many cheap alternatives that are still very meaningful. Therefore, I put together a list of 10 Valentine’s gifts that anyone would love to receive, all with a friendly price tag.

 DIY Valentine’s Day Box

You can find any box you might have. (Maybe one of those Chegg boxes or Amazon boxes you just have laying around) Get some colored construction paper to cover the box and make it look cute, be creative with decorations, then fill it with their favorite candy. If it is for someone who loves puns, then go ahead and find punny candy that will make that person Snicker.

Personalized Valentine’s Day Card

I always love doing this one. You can use your own construction paper and make a personalized Valentine’s Day card from scratch with your own personal touches to it. Glue on a picture you might have of you two together and handwrite a message. Another option is online you can go to Walgreens or Walmart photo section for personalized valentines cards. I recommend to always check for online coupon codes too and they can range from a few cents to $2 or so. They have so many designs available and you can customize the card as you please, great in case you might not be the best artsy person yourself. My favorite is to pick a preset design and then add a couple cute pictures of me and my significant other together. Then just hand write a sweet message on the inside explaining all the reasons why you love them. This will be sure to warm up their heart.

Goodies-Filled Mason Jar

You can buy a mason jar which runs around $2-$3 and fill it with small goodies they would like. You can fill it with chapstick, candy, face mask and so on. Tie a cute ribbon around the lid and you instantly make the mason jar super cute.

Cook Homemade Dinner

Okay, so we might not all be chefs, but it is the thought that counts here. You can find out what that person’s favorite dinner is to cook and then I recommend to look up a food tutorial on YouTube. I do this, and half the time it seems to work for me. If you do not have access to certain cooking tools try borrowing someone’s crock pot or do some easy no-bake meals! Plus cooking at home will still be more friendly to your wallet than a fancy restaurant.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Ordering chocolate covered strawberries can cost up to a hefty $30. How about you make them yourself!? I inserted a link to a simple recipe. It might get a little messy with all the chocolate drizzle, but they always turn out so good. Buying strawberries, chocolate, and sprinkles at your local store saves you way more money than ordering some. Also this way your significant or friend know they were made with lots of love.

Bake Valentine’s Day Dessert

You can bake something like brownies. A box or two of brownies are very inexpensive. I prefer to do two boxes so they are thicker brownies to work with and to jazz it up, use a heart shaped cookie cutter to make the brownies into heart shapes. You can buy an inexpensive Valentine’s Day container and place them in there to make them look even more presentable. Or if you don’t have an oven you can buy a Valentine’s Themed mug and do a mug cake, which is all done in the microwave. I linked an easy to follow recipe for the mug cake down below.

Heart Shaped Pizza

No need to spend a ton of money on a fancy dinner with this one. There a few places that will make heart shaped pizzas for the holiday. One of them being, Papa Johns. Eat a yummy pizza, throw on some cozy pjs and watch some netflix for the night. I always think this is one of my favorite things to do, simple but always enjoyable.

DIY Love In a Mug

This is for the coffee lovers in your life. All you need is an inexpensive mug, red and pink sharpies and a bag of their favorite chocolate or candy. The nice thing is you can customize the mug with any design you want. That on it’s own is special, but to add a little extra to it you can buy a small bag of their favorite candy.

Personalized Love Book

Who doesn’t love to hear why you love them? You can either start a book by scratch that is filled with all your amazing moments together or if you are shorter on time buy this premade book where you fill in the blank on the most thoughtful parts. This will definitely make that special someone smile.

Inexpensive Plush Animal

I know everyone talks about those over sized teddy bears or sloths that are too big to even have in your home. Except, you do not have to buy that expensive oversized sloth/teddy bear everyone keeps posting about, instead opt out for a smaller one. I linked one below that is only $9.99. That one is especially good if you know someone obssessed with sloths. This really goes for whatever that person likes, teddy bears, dogs, and so on. You do not need to spend $50 on an oversized plush just buy a more budget friendly alternative, trust me that person will appreciate it just as much.

My typical day goes a little like this: Coffee. Code. Sleep. Repeat. I am all about female empowerment, heavy coffee drinker, and a computer nerd.
