Why do Girls Misuse Makeup? A College Guy’s Perspective.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Francisco chapter.

Perhaps the reason is because boys are visually stimulated and  as a group tend to go “gaga” for celebrities like Megan Fox and Scarlett Johansson, but I just don’t get why girls wear makeup at all.

On television, “good looking” sells, so everyone on screen (boys and men included) wear makeup and that makes sense for marketing purposes.

But in everyday life, do us regular people need to wear makeup? There are plenty of good looking guys in real life and they aren’t using makeup.

Likewise there are plenty of good looking girls in real life not using makeup. Unfortunately, it seems like the majority of girls/women are programmed into using it a consistent basis -and that bothers me.

Ladies, you don’t need it.

In my personal opinion, girls look much better without makeup. Almost everyone has dealt with acne of some sort, and a girl who is confident enough to be in her own true skin is actually a turn on.

No guy that’s worth dating will be picky over a couple of pimples as it’s almost a guarantee we’ve dealt with the same or worse.

Girls look fine and natural in their own skin, and actually the only time a girl looks bad is when she wears really thick makeup. Ask any guy, caked on makeup does the complete opposite of its intended use.

Now as much as I dislike makeup use of any kind in everyday situations, (i.e. not a camera) you ladies should also use it correctly; aka -in moderation.

I’m not an expert on makeup, but one line from the show “Full House” sums it up well. In one episode, DJ goes to middle school, experiments with makeup and uses too much of everything.

When she ends up having a bad day, Aunt Becky then consoles her and teachers her how to use makeup correctly. She tells DJ, “the secret to makeup, is to make it look like you’re not wearing any.”

Ladies, if this truly is the secret to makeup, why in the world are some of you wearing two-inch-long eye lashes, deep blue eye shadow and thick, cakey cover up?

Skin color is not blue so why should your eye shadow be?

Back in high school I always thought to myself that the girls would look so much better at prom if they did their makeup and hair the same way they did it for the casual dances. Girls at prom did too much.

Look normal and hot, not fake and hot.

Ladies, just remember the simpler the better. Less is more.  And more often then not you’re prettier without makeup than with it.

San Francisco

Andrew is a rising senior at San Francisco State University majoring in broadcast journalism. While he hopes to some day work in the sports media industry, becoming a professional columnist for a women's magazine is also on his radar. While in college Andrew has contributed sports columns to such sites like Foxsports.com, Insidehockey.com, and Bleacherreport.com. But don't be fooled, he isn't just your typical jock, after all he is willing to admit he actually loves chick flicks like "27 Dresses" "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton" and "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". He also enjoys shows like "The OC", "One Tree Hill", "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and "Teen Wolf" and wonders aloud why more college men don't open up about their love for these types of programs.
