Emma Gribbon, Intern for E! News International

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Francisco chapter.

If you could have your dream internship, what would it be?

Emma Gribbon, a San Francisco State University senior, got hers this summer, when she worked as an intern for E! News International in Los Angeles.

So how in the world did she land this opportunity?

“I just applied for every position and kept sending my resumé. I might have even applied to be a janitor,” she said.

Gribbon, a Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts (BECA) major, worked with E! News this summer where she got to check scripts for the anchors, attend events, along with other various tasks. Because it was the international news branch, she was unable to write because of legality problems, but getting to read and edit Giuliana Rancic’s script sounds pretty extreme!

Being an intern at E! Entertainment, Gribbon was given an all-access pass that allowed her access to the green rooms and even the dressing rooms.

“It was weird to walk by and see Joan Rivers writing out her script,” she said.

One time, Gribbon said her and a fellow intern followed Giuliana Rancic into an elevator after they saw her walk by their desk (don’t lie, we would all do it).

Gribbon also got to attend a number of live television shows. During her internship, she was an audience member at the Chelsea Lately show and Fashion Police. She got the opportunity to meet celebrities such as Joan Rivers and Kelly Osbourne.

“Joan Rivers is my all-time favorite idol. It’s my dream to bring the comedy back to the red carpet,” said Gribbon, speaking on the time she got to meet Joan Rivers.

When meeting Rivers, Gribbon asked her if she would take a picture with her, Rivers responded with “Don’t ask anyone to do anything in this industry, just do it!” There you go ladies and gentleman, the wise words of Joan Rivers.

Gribbon said the most rewarding parts of the internship were getting to network with people that could help her eventually land a job.

“It was cool to see that a lot of audio and visual editors [at E!] actually graduated from San Francisco State,” she said.

Gribbon said she would love to be able to intern for them again this next summer after she graduates, but hopes to try her hand at a radio internship soon.

Gribbon, originally from Claremont, Calif., said she hopes to end up in New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles someday.

Although she loves working at the Apple store in downtown San Francisco for now, Gribbon said she would love to write for television or even get to work in front of the camera.

You can find her as a television anchor for San Francisco State’s State of Events news broadcast, where she most recently covered Fleet Week. Gribbon is also currently a host for the KSFS radio show “Pop Now.” You can hear her on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
