Top 5 Sunset Spots in San Diego

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Diego chapter.

It happens every single day. Well, more like every single evening. You can attend with a partner, a group, or alone. It is completely free, and it lasts around thirty five minutes. And each one is breathtakingly beautiful and entirely unique—you’ll never see another with exactly the same look.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, you’re in luck. Because as students at the University of San Diego, we live in a city which features some of the best sunsets in the world.

5.  Garden of the Sea at University of San Diego

Kicking off our countdown is the most easily accessible sunset spot for those attending USD: the Garden of the Sea. Nestled just behind the Institute of Peace and Justice, this this spot overlooks Mission Bay and offers some of the most colorful sunsets in our area. Only an 8 minute walk from the Immaculata, this is the perfect location to unwind as the sun goes down after a long day of studying.

4. Crystal Pier – Pacific Beach

The fourth most impressive sunset in San Diego lies only a 17 minute drive away from USD: Pacific Beach’s Crystal Pier. With such easy access, Crystal Pier is probably the most convenient location for a last minute sunset experience. The wooden pier serves as a makeshift window to gaze through, and nearly guarantees some pretty artistic photos. Overall, Crystal Pier is not one to miss.

3. Windansea Beach

Notoriously featured on instagram by photographers from around the world, Windansea beach is clearly the perfect location for a secluded sunset. Ususally the only other people present are surfers ending their days, so Windansea is one the most romantic places to lay down a blanket and cuddle up next to your significant other.Though it is a bit further of a drive, at 27 minutes, the atmosphere is well worth the extra time in the car.

2. La Jolla Cove

Second place for best sunset in San Diego undoubtedly goes to La Jolla Cove, located 26 minutes North of USD. La Jolla Cove offers a multitude of shops and restaurants to peruse while you wait for the golden hour. Once the sunset starts, the most immersive location lies down a cement staircase to a beach that perfectly balances between rocky and sandy. But beware – the tide comes in quickly after the sun goes down, so head back up as soon as it’s over!

1. Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla

Byfar the most impressive sunset location in San Diego, and our number one sunset, is Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla. The Gliderport is made up of scenic cliffs which, in my opinion, present the most beautiful display of the sunset on the face of the Earth. With ample parking and free access, the Gliderport offers a convinient way to be transported into the sunset viewing experience of your dreams. Maybe it’s just because I have a borderline obsession with sunsets, but experiencing one at the Gliderport will change your life.
