Surviving El Niño

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Diego chapter.

If any of you are like me, you probably picked USD for its proximity to beaches, warm weather, and gorgeous scenery anywhere you look. Well surprise! El Niño has officially arrived and I am here to ensure that you’re fully prepared for the colder temperatures and unexpected rainstorms that El Niño is bound to bring.

First and foremost, you will want a rain jacket or umbrella. There is nothing worse than walking in a downpour of rain and arriving to class drenched. Personally I prefer the jacket because it’s much easier to deal with walking to and from classes and you’re not stuck with storing a wet umbrella. They may not be the most flattering, but there are plenty of colors and styles to choose from! Sport’s Authority has some great ones that double as athletic wear.

Secondly, sweaters!! You can wear them with jeans, leggings, dresses, and look either ready for an interview or to be comfy casual! They’re my favorite item and an absolute necessity for winter. There are so many different styles out there and are the easiest things to wear in these colder seasons. Seriously, all you have to do is grab a big sweater and some skinny jeans.

Now what do you add to your bland look of a big sweater and skinny jeans? Well a scarf of course! The bigger and longer they are the more comfy they become! Scarves are a go to accessory that are absolutely essential to cold weather that look cute and keep you warm! If you’re wearing a pattern shirt it’s probably better to keep a neutral colored scarf and vice versa, but don’t shy away from adding a bright color to the mix!

Finally, to finish the look, boots. We all have at least one pair of boots, so put away the flip-flops and throw on some boots to keep your feet warm and dry. You’ll thank me later when you’re not sniffling after catching a cold from the rain. Once again, there is a wide array of styles to choose from be it ankle length or over the knee. A water resistant material is ideal so they don’t get ruined stepping through puddles, but any shoe can be made waterproof with waterproof spray!

Hopefully this helps with any confusion regarding what to wear when these random spurts of El Niño hit! Don’t forget to dance in the rain and enjoy it while it lasts because we all know San Diego will be back to sunny and 75 in no time!

Just your average beach bum that has an obsession with dogs and smiling :)
