Trump for President: Are the requirements to be President too low?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

Every 4 years a president is elected. However, the 2016 election has stirred up a lot of conversation and our definition of a president has transformed. I believe the change can be attributed to the change in the time period. During each time period, the needs of individuals change and in order to meet them, the president must be able to accommodate the individual’s needs but also balance them with the needs of the United States as a whole.

As president it is expected that you have a desire to help others and reflect the values and principles in which America is constantly striving to uphold. Since a big part of the president’s responsibility is to make decisions, it is also beneficial to have an individual with political experience and a proper education. Being able to think rationally and have discipline would also make them a great candidate for presidency.

However, Donald Trump does not demonstrate any of these good qualities that should be considered when electing a president. Throughout the campaign, Trump has done nothing but spew hate towards women, Muslims, veterans, minorities and many other groups. Some of his misogynistic views that have been discussed have included an opinion of his that military sexual assault against women should basically be expected. Along with oversexualizing women and believing that they should not be given equal rights as men, Trump also condemns women for having abortions.  Punishing women for this act denies them of a fundamental right for a woman to be in control of her own body. Many other groups have been slandered by Trump during this presidential campaign and called terrorists, lazy immigrants, killers and rapists. From these quotes, one can conclude that Donald Trump is culturally insensitive and catalyzes the hate present within society today.

Another reason that Trump would not be able to handle being president is because he is not in it for the well- being of the people. His sole motivation is to make money for himself and increase his wealth. His initiatives, if put in motion, would only serve as an advantage to the already wealthy, upper- class citizens of society. This would only widen the wealth gap between middle-income and upper-income families.

As I discussed previously, a presidential candidate should be educated within the realm of politics. Trump does not have any experience that could help him complete the responsibilities as president. Another factor to consider is that when you elect a president, you are also electing a first lady/gentleman to fulfil their assigned duties. Melania Trump, Donald Trump’s wife, also does not have any experience and did not obtain a degree during her first year and only time spent in college. These factors would hinder both of them from being able to fulfill their responsibilities as President and First Lady of the United States.

A president is expected to represent not just the white house but the country. In order to do this the person must use rational thinking, have self-control and be able to unite the American people for the greater good of the country. Since Trump has a record of lying, making dirty deals, a biased view of members that are present in today’s society and no experience that he could lean on to help him fulfill presidential duties, the claim that he would make a good president, cannot be justified.
