A Single Girl’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

The 14th of February is met with love struck couples, endless Facebook posts and candy grams along with anti-valentine’s day protestors. Rather than sulking over not having a romantic dinner, celebrate V-day in your own way.

1. Buy yourself a gift or treat: An important aspect of Valentine’s day is receiving a gift or delicacy. What a perfect way to make yourself feel good, buying your favorite candy or flowers to make your room more festive. There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself, buy those chocolates and be happy.

2. Hang out with your friends: If you’re feeling lonely invite your friends over and have a lit valentine’s day function. If partying isn’t your thing, invite them over to watch movies or out to eat. The goal is to shift the focus from couples being cute to enjoying your time with friends.

3. Celebrate the day with your family: The kind of love expressed on this day doesn’t have to be limited to romantic love. Families can take advantage and buy each other heart shaped gifts. Call up your loved ones and show them that V-day is inclusive to all kinds of love.

4. Remember Valentine’s day is a commercial holiday: People often make presents a high priority. This day has begun to steer away from love and turn into a money making occasion. Think of all the money you’re saving!

5. Celebrate couples: Despite being single be happy for healthy couples. When you do find genuine love, someone else may be cheering you on as well.

6. It’s only one day out of the year: Don’t allow one day to get you down. If you’re single this year things may change in 365 days. Plan the fun you’re going to have next time around, despite being single or taken

7. Love yourself first: You don’t need a boyfriend or girlfriend to feel special. Take the time to remind yourself that you’re a beautiful person with a lot to offer not just to a romantic partner but the world as a whole
