Review: American Horror Story Season 8: Flourish or Flop *Spoilers*

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

Season eight of American Horror Story premiered Wednesday, September 12, 2018. With the overarching theme this year being Apocalypse, we follow a small group of survivors after the nuclear missile of World War III hit the United States.

We follow Mr. Gallant (Evan Peters), Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt (Leslie Grossman), Timothy Campbell (Kyle Allen), Emily (Ash Santos), and many more in the first episode as they scramble to find safety in the midst of a world war with just minutes of prior notice.

These characters are selected as survivors because of their genetic makeup and forced to live in Ms. Whilhemina Venable’s (Sarah Paulson) and Ms. Miriam Mead’s (Kathy Bates) underground bunker free of any radiation or other contaminants.

In this bunker the rules are strict, and food is scarce but after a few murders, tortures, and cannibalism we are met with the famous Michael Langdon (Cody Fern) appearing unannounced to the bunker setting his own rules and games for even Ms. Venable and Ms. Mead to follow in order to survive.

All characters must find a way to survive Michael Langdon’s “survival” tests and meanwhile, there is a love affair going on between Emily and a Timothy that we could not care less about, as well as a reappearance of the man in the rubber suit from Murder House who has his way with Mr. Gallant; a forbidden act in the bunker.

All in all, there are a few jump-scares with shock-value and this season definitely makes you think about how you would survive in such a situation. Although this season seems to be starting off slow, American Horror Story is known for its profound twists, turns and storylines that many may not understand until the next episode.

I will be giving this season a fat chance because there is so much in store such as reappearance of Coven and Murder House characters with a nice mashup of the two seasons. There seems to be a lot to look forward to in season 8 and despite the flop of the last season, I have a feeling writer Ryan Murphy will not disappoint. Will you stay tuned to AHS season 8?
