A Minimalist’s Guide to Spring Break Vacation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

Spring Break is right around the corner for many of us. That means a whole week without school work or classes. As if that doesn’t sound good enough, Spring Break also means an opportunity to travel somewhere.

Whether it is a week in Ocean City or the Caribbean, embarking on travels means packing. Sometimes the overwhelm of packing can take the relaxation right out of your vacation, especially when you have to lug your stuff everywhere you go. Fear not!

Here are my top tips for packing lights while still managing to look fabulous on your Spring Break get away.

1. Only take one pair of sunglasses

I know they may be stylish, but sunglasses are fragile. Do not waste precious luggage/ backpack space on multiple pairs of shades when you can just bring a single elegant pair that matches with everything.

2. Leave the blow dryers at home

More often than not, hotels include a hairdryer in the room. If they do not you can always ask at the front desk. You may even want to try going for natural beachy hair while on your vacation, you may be surprised by how awesome your hair looks.

3. Prepare your outfits in advance

Don’t fall into the trap of packing individual articles of clothing that are cute. This often leads to half a suitcase of unworn clothing. Instead, plan your outfits based on the activities you know you will be doing.

This will not only guarantee you love your look, but also that you maximize your relaxation time because you will not be stressing over what tank top goes best with your high waisted shorts.

4. Make your clothes do double duty

One of my favorite ways to conserve space is to pack outfits that I can wear for multiple occasions. For example, a sun dress is perfect to wear out to the beach and can also be dressed up for going out to dinner. I also like to plan on wearing my outfits a couple different times on my vacation.

5. Bring travel sized cosmetics

Most hotels provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash so if you can go a week without your usual shower products I recommend giving it a try. If not, purchase small travel bottles and transfer small amounts of each of your products into accordingly. Another option is to buy travel sized versions of your products at your local drug store.

6. Remember it is about the experience, not the stuff

When you are packing for your vacation, think about how much easier your travels would be if you did not have to lug a heavy bag around the airport/ in and out of a car with you. If you are anything like me, the less you travel with the more relaxed your entire vacation becomes.

Most things you choose to leave at home can be easily replaced if absolutely necessary. Make this Spring Break in experiment to see how little you can live with and still have fun, you may be surprised!
