Body Negativity to Positivity

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

Rolls, stretch marks, and sagging skin, I have it all. Looking in the mirror everyday trying to figure out what to wear before I walked to class, feeling my entire body jiggling as I walk. This is a scary thought, not just for me but for everyone else.

I was afraid of what people saw and thought of me. Thinking boys would not find me attractive; I would not be able to wear all the clothes that other girls could wear. Complete fear struck my body every morning.

So as a result, I thought I would lose a little… or a lot. I started going to the gym aggressively, skipping meals, downloading apps to count calories, and stepping on a scale every day. I was exhausting myself to be smaller and it was not healthy. I was falling into a hole that I could not get out of.

Then one day I changed I realized that the only opinions that mattered were my own and that I needed to stopped worrying so much. I realized that this was the body I was born with, it has been with me for a very long time and it is not going anywhere.

I must treat her well meaning; eating right (cheat meals included), maintaining a good exercise routine, routine hygiene, mostly just keeping up with myself. My advice is to throw away the scale if it has control over you.

Make small changes that you enjoy, do exercises or activities that get you moving. Find clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in. Look at yourself in the mirror every day and compliment yourself on what you love about yourself and your body.

Do what benefits you. It may take awhile but who cares. It is your life and you should be able to define how you feel and what you want yourself to be. Do not let people’s words or how they think you should look define how you see yourself.

I have embraced and am starting to love every roll and stretch mark that my body has created. Surround yourself with people that love you for who you are and you will start to notice small changes along the way. Do it for you and the body you love.
