This weekend, the Saint Mary’s College Theatre Department presents award-winning musical, Chicago! In O’ Laughlin Auditorium on Saint Mary’s campus, all are welcome to watch the fabulous performance either Friday April 15th, Saturday April 16th (both at 7:30 p.m.), or on the Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. April 17th.
The glitzy, glamorous, and ironic story comes to life in a lavish production with a full orchestra all three nights with a cast comprised of 45 performers from Saint Mary’s, Notre Dame, and actors in the South Bend community.
Set in the legendary city amidst the roaring “hot jazz” 20s, Chicago tells the tale of two, rival sexy murderesses, whom are locked up in the Cook County Jail. Chicago. Velma, nightclub star, played by junior Sarah McKevitt, serves her time for killing her husband and sister, after she discovers the two in bed together. Roxie, played by senior Katie Nelson, is confident choir girl, who serves her time for killing the lover she’s been cheating on her husband with. Come watch Velma enlist the help of prison matron Mama Morton and slickster lawyer Billy Flynn in order to prepare the world for a splashy showbiz comeback, and see what happens when Roxie catches wind of this.
McKevitt believes “our production is fun, flashy, and really different from the culture we are all used to here at Saint Mary’s.”
“There is so much talent at Saint Mary’s that gets looked over. We have amazing music and art departments that deserve to be seen! This particular type of production is so special because it only happens once every four years. With a completely full, professional orchestra pit, the costumes, talent, set, lights, and design is truly amazing! It’s a high caliber show that our little school has done an AMAZING job with!”
