With break approaching and the leaves changing, it’s hard to not think about all the fun October traditions I have with my family back home, and how excited I am to cram them all in over fall break. Taking a hayride, visiting haunted houses, carving pumpkins, decorating the house for Halloween- it all brings back amazing childhood memories. If you’re like me and love the fall, it can be hard to wait until break to visit the pumpkin patches and snuggle up with apple cider. Here’s some ways you can enjoy those Halloween season traditions here in the Bend!
1. Lehman’s Orchard
Lehman’s Orchard is in Niles, Michigan, which is only a short drive from campus. You can pick fresh honey crisp apples and buy a jug of their homemade apple cider. It’s a great way to get outside and enjoy the weather before it starts to get seriously cold!
2. Thistleberry Farms
Nothing takes me back to my childhood quite like visiting a pumpkin patch. With four different corn mazes, a you-pick pumpkin patch, hay rides, and a giant moon bounce, there’s plenty to do at Thistleberry Farms, located right here in South Bend! And who doesn’t want an adorable pumpkin to decorate their room?
3. Niles Scream Park
Niles Scream Park is every haunted house lover’s dream. Not only does it have a huge, horrifying haunted house complete with rotating floors and an elevator drop, but it also offers haunted hayrides, haunted mazes, and even a mind-reader! They also change up the haunted house every year, so it never gets old.
4. South Bend Farmers Market
Not only are farmers markets adorable and Instagram-worthy, but it’s also great to pick up fresh, healthy foods for your dorm and get to know some awesome local vendors! In addition to fresh produce, you can find homemade fudge, spices, baked goods, homemade candles, and one-of-a-kind jewelry. Be sure to visit on October 24th during their Oktoberfest!
