Don’t Pull a Kim K Insta

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Saint Mary's chapter.

Did everyone see the Kim Kardashian’s photo that “broke” the Internet? Ladies, this is not a thing.

Over Thanksgiving break, I asked one of my long time guy friends what he thought about this pair of edgy new glasses I wanted to get. I asked him if he would find these attractive on a girl (mistake number one). He answered with a response that gave me the idea for this article. He said, “G, a girl can rock anything. As long as she has the confidence to pull it off. Buy them and rock it.” This response should be something girls should always keep in mind. Anything can be worn well and anyone can look amazing, if you show the confidence in yourself that you own it. Confidence is hot! With this being said, I feel that confidence is the last thing being shown in the outburst of provocative pictures being posted by females.

Stars like Kim Kardashian are painting the picture, that revealing yourself on social media is okay. Unfortunately, with the skimpy trends of the 80s and 90s reemerging in mainstream fashion today, girls are wearing less and less clothes. Instagram has also become the leader in the social media world for the millennial generation. This is leaving the platform open for girls to post pictures half naked because “crop tops are in” and “Instagram can be artsy.” I am here to say that ladies this needs to stop.

Expressing yourself with new fashion trends or maybe throwing on a funky lip color can show the world that you have the confidence to be your own person and being daring! Taking pictures of yourself half naked doesn’t show confidence but instead allows the world to see you only as a physical object. Confidence is a characteristic that empowers who you are as a women. It allows you to express your story, whatever that might be. Coming from someone that loves fashion and spends time researching trends, I believe the beauty comes from the art of the clothes, not the lack there of.

“If you have the confidence, rock it.” Beyoncé has been leading the way as a pop culture’s newest feminist. She has produced songs and given countless interviews in hopes of promoting the self-esteem and self-worth of young females today. She has been quoted saying, “Your self-worth is determined by you. You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are. Why be defined on your body. You are much more.” Beyoncé is considered by many as the fiercest women in Hollywood. Well how do you think she got this way?

In the words of Iggy, “I dare you to walk a mile in my Louboutins.” This line means so much to what it means to be a women. We have the power to concur the world, and we can also do it in 6 inch high beautiful shoes. Ladies, find your passion, set a goal, put on those heals and go get it!

Here are 5 things you should post instead:

1) Picture of you and your best friends

2) Picture of you doing what you love

3) Picture of your school

4) Picture of your family

5) Picture of you being fabulous

These five depictions tell the story of who you are, who you love, and what you do. Define who you are and be confident enough to go after you goal.

If you take anything from this article, take this: “A girl must be two things, classy and fabulous” –Coco Chanel
