Why Being Single For The Summer Is The Best Thing For You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sacred Heart chapter.

Confession: I am a former single lady hater, meaning I HATED being single.

Since the tender age of 12 when I had my first real boyfriend, I can’t remember a time when I was single for longer than a month or two. I always enjoyed the attention, and company that having a boyfriend gave me, but recently I have come to love the single status.

For some reason, women have created a negative connotation for the word “single.” To be honest, it is such a blessing to not have the burden of being responsible for someone else’s happiness. Seeing as summer is upon us, now is the time to embrace your inner single lady, and realize that being single is basically the greatest thing that could happen to you!

For starters, you can do whatever your heart desires. If you want to dress up and go to the bar on a Tuesday you can, because no one is waiting up for you (except your dog) or obnoxiously texting you all night asking if boys talked to you. You can wear whatever you like without the guilt of feeling like a flirt because your boyfriend thinks your shorts are too “short.” Your friends automatically love you more when you’re single, because you’re always ready for a good time. No man is stealing you away from your besties, and there are endless opportunities for men to buy you drinks at the bar.

I’m not sure when things changed for me, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to appreciate my alone time more and more. Nothing quite satisfies me like spending an afternoon reading a good book, or planning for the future with me, myself and I. This led me to my appreciation for being single, spending a summer alone to reflect on myself, and the year I’ve had. Having time to see the person I truly want to become gives me the opportunity to learn who I want to be with in the future. I’m using this summer to better myself as an individual; in healthy ways, such as going to the gym consistently and eating to fuel my body instead of my sweet tooth. So for all you single ladies; please embrace this time in your life when you have not a care in the world and enjoy your besties!
