The Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are known for are their frantic weather patterns. It seems as though those three states, in particular, have a mind of their own when it comes to what normal weather is. Growing up in North Jersey, it is hard not to notice these drastic weather changes that make me feel like I’m in the Bahamas one day and Antarctica the next. It is through my 19 years of life that these 5 weather patterns seem to come way too often.
A Random Warm Day in February
February is normally the month where it is still cold and cold weather is just constantly around. It’s dark by 5:00 pm and everyone just wants to sleep. However, in my years of living in New Jersey, there are always those one or two days where it is in the high 50s and everyone in town are in t-shirts and jeans. Morale is at an all-time high and everyone is in bright spirits that it is this warm in February. Just when we think spring is near, the following week a massive snow storm comes and we are back to the weather we know and love.
Snow in April
This past Easter weekend exceeded my expectation of unusual weather in New Jersey. When I was first told of snow, I didn’t believe it because I figured it was an April Fool’s joke. After waking up Monday morning with six inches of snow on the ground, I knew there was no fooling involved. I was not only mad, but I was disappointed too. I mean, it’s April and I just want to be able to wear cuter clothes and get a tan.
Unbearable Cold Weather
Walking to class in 20 degree weather is like walking through a snow storm in Antarctica. Connecticut can get especially frigid to the point where tears form in my eyes and I wish I was somewhere on a beach. Yes, staying inside with a blanket and some hot tea is ideal but I would prefer warmer weather over wearing 30 layers of clothing.
Unbearable Hot Weather
Walking to class in 90 degree humidity is like walking through the desert, with exceptionally frizzy hair. By the time I get to class, my armpits are sweaty (we’ve all been there), and my makeup is dripping off my face (dramatic, but it sure feels like it). The Tri-State area isn’t known for being warm, but it has those days of feeling like a tropical island with high humidity.
Normal Weather
A rare occasion, but normal weather does occur in the Tri-State area. There will be a week or two where a nice cool but warm day with bright sun will shine everywhere and life is as usual. These days are what make these states the best and the nature around is just beautiful. It’s these days where the Sacred Heart campus is so lively and everyone is outside. I yearn for these days, so c’mon Mother Nature!
Though this weather might be annoying at times and I question why I still live in New Jersey, it’s what makes these parts so special and it’s something that I am used to at this point in my life. I didn’t think that it was possible to write so much about weather patterns in these states, but we definitely all think about the weather too much.
