The Struggle of Being a Freshie

Ah, the nightmare of being a freshman has come back to haunt us. Just in time for Halloween! But really, I thought the days of being a lost freshman were through, but I guess not. We just came from being at top class of our school, with our best friends, to the bottom while sometimes feeling like we have no one. You always hear how amazing college is, but the reality is, freshman year can be hard.

Especially in the first couple months.

Wondering your place in college and if the friends you are making will turn out to be sincere ones is overwhelming to say the least. College is a new atmosphere with both challenges and opportunities. People always say, “Get Involved”, but what if you are and don’t feel involved? I’ve been given advice not to go home and stick it through which is what I’ve been doing. Sometimes I feel like even though college only started exactly one month ago, people are already becoming less social and defining who their friends are. There are so many factors of college that require balance: academics, social life, staying healthy, keeping in touch with family, and so on.

These thoughts are coming from a freshman only one month into school. I think it’s just one of those things that we need to push through, because it isn’t meant to be easy. The reason we get involved is to find our best friends. The reason we go to college is to have a successful job. The reason we leave home, sometimes unwillingly, is to become independent. College is good for us in every aspect, so just think to yourself how complete you will feel at graduation when you are depressed freshman year. You’re not alone in this, which is what someone needs to hear after going through such a huge change like this one.

My mom always says, “Everything is going to be okay”.

I think of that anytime I’m struggling through something because even though you may be struggling now, there will be a time when you won’t be. Reflect on the good times, don’t dwell on the bad. You got this!
