In the 21st Century, there are a lot of ways we consume media, and one of the biggest ways we consume media is through movies. Then we take those movies and talk about them for weeks on end on other platforms like Twitter and Instagram. Even before movies are released, people take their thoughts to social media and talk about how excited they are about these movies. The trailers and memes spread like wildfire through likes and reblogs. 2018 has a lot of movies that sparked an internet conversation.

1. “Avengers Infinity War”

One of the most talked about movies of the year, “Avengers Infinity War” was heartbreaking and left the audience in tears. This movie also sparked a lot of memes and had the biggest worldwide opening since 2002 at $640,521,291.  

 

 

2. “Ralph Breaks the Internet”

The sequel to “Wreck it Ralph” was the second biggest Thanksgiving weekend box office movie for Disney after “Frozen” in 2013. “Ralph Breaks the Internet” was talked about the second the first trailer was released, espeically over the scene with the princesses having a sleepover. This scene was also the victim of many hilarious memes.

3. “Incredibles 2”

Fourteen years after the first “Incredibles” was released, Disney finally blessed us with a sequel that takes place right where the first movie left off. “Incredibles 2” is the second highest-grossing animated film of all time right behind “Frozen”, and how could it not be with its amazing characters such as the ever-so-poised Edna Mode.

4. “Bird Box”

One of the last movies of the year, but possibly the most talked about. This movie took over the internet within hours of its release. According to Netflix, over 45 million accounts have watched Bird Box during the first week of its release.

 

5. “Crazy Rich Asians”

Based off of the novel by Kevin Kwan, this movie features an all Asian cast and the unstoppable Constance Wu as the main character. This movie had heart that went beyond all of the glamour shots of the eccentric lifestyle of the Young family.

6. “Black Panther”

The world’s ninth-highest -grossing film of all time, and yet not the favorite superhero movie of 2018. “Black Panther” was revolutionary with an all-star cast that is predominantly black and the director, Ryan Coogler, was a Sacramento State alumnus.

7. “Spiderman into the Spider-Verse”

Most people wrote this movie off right away after learning it’s an animated film, but this is one of the best animated films the world has seen. With the animators’ attention to detail, storyline and character development, this movie is going to be a classic for a long time.  

8. “A Quiet Place”

One of the most popular horror movies of 2018, “A Quiet Place” is one of John Krasinski’s mastermind screenplays. This movie took the internet by storm with its eerie themes and of course a bearded John Krasinski.

9. “A Star is Born”

Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut was a phenomenon that took the world by storm. Lady Gaga was a dynamic female lead that led this film to the top and gave us an amazing soundtrack to belt out during car rides.  

10. “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”

Another one of Netflix’s hits based off the novel by Jenny Han that warmed the hearts of everyone who watched it. With the ever-charming Peter Kavinsky and the adorable Lara Jean Covey, this movie was a believable teenage romantic comedy.

11. “Hereditary”

As one of the horror fan-favorite movies of the year, “Hereditary” was director Ari Aster’s debut. This film was eerie and had a dark ambiance throughout the movie and made the list for a lot of people’s favorite movies of 2018.

12. “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Between everyone’s love for queen and everyone’s love for Rami Malek, this blockbuster hit is still showing for the third month while most movies are only in theaters for one. This movie is packed with heart-shattering acting and the electricity of being at a live concert.

13. “Love, Simon”

This heart-warming tale of a teenager coming into his sexuality was a huge stride for the LGBTQ+ community. Based on the novel by Becky Albertalli, this movie was a tidal wave in the gay rights movement.

14. “Game Night”

One of the best comedies that have blessed the silver screen in a while, “Game Night” was a witty take on how an average game night can take a wrong turn. With a comedic all-star cast and non-stop thrills and laughs, this movie was a favorite among many.

15. “A Simple Favor”

Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick was a duo no one expected but everyone soon realized they need. They made this mystery thriller what it is and brought their ever-complex characters to life.
