This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sacramento chapter.

Halloween is right around the corner and approaching fast, but what if you don’t have anything planned? Don’t worry, I got you covered and I have a solution. I have put together five spooky movies to help you pull off the scariest, binge-worthy night ever! It’ll be perfect to help you and your friends get in the Halloween spirit for this haunting season. The genres included are: slasher, horror, thriller and fantasy/animation. So, take your pick and start watching for the most wicked nightmares you are about to have.

This is a cliché type of scary movie. It is about a group of teenagers, who receive a series of phone calls from a serial killer. As they scramble to discover the killer’s identity, the game gets deadly. Not to mention, towards the ending, you won’t see it coming. One by one, each character faces a series of challenges in order to save themselves from the killer. It’s definitely a must see for Halloween. I don’t want to give away too much detail because you’ll just have to watch it to find out! If you really enjoy the first movie, you can binge-watch the other movies in this series. So, you better grab your candy and popcorn to enjoy the series!

This movie isn’t your typical slasher film, it’s a film that will make a lasting, scary impression. It is based on a book written by Stephen King, widely known as the “King of Horror and Suspense.” In The Shining, a family travels to an isolated hotel in Colorado, but during their trip Jack Nicholson’s character begins to terrorize his family as he drifts further from reality. There’s all kinds of twists and turns in this movie from a gory blood scene, twins and violent hallucinations. If you want to know more, you will have to watch this classic film!

Where Can I Find It?: Netflix; Amazon Prime Video.

3.The Quiet Place: 95% Rotten Tomatoes

This is a recent movie that came out last April of 2018. It stars John Krasinski, who is most known for his famous role of The Office. Also, Emily Blunt, who is known as Miranda Priestly’s snobby assistant in The Devil Wears Prada. Fun Fact: Krasinski is the director of this movie. In this movie a family must live in silence to fight and avoid the deadly monsters. It is a must-see because sign language is their main method for survival. Imagine, you can only communicate with your hands while fighting for your life in terror. The challenges and communication barriers seen in this movie plays a unique perspective for people who are deaf or mute, which takes it to a whole new level for the viewing audience.

A true classic and how could it not be?! Michael Myers, a serial killer who murdered his sister and went to jail for 15 years, managed to escape before his hearing date and returned to his hometown where he found other victims to kill. There are lots of movies in this franchise and a new Halloween movie was added to the franchise on October 19, 2018. This is definitely one of the few slasher films that truly get you in the spirit of Halloween. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis, who is also known for her mother figure role to Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday. Curtis has been in almost all of the Halloween movies. The original movie came out in the late 1970’s and the fact that a new one has been added to the series recently, shows this movie is a true classic.

Where Can I Find It?: Syfy and AMC during the month of October; Netflix

5. The Nightmare Before Christmas: 95% Rotten Tomatoes

This movie isn’t your typical gory, terrified screams and serial killers, who love killing victims. Instead, this is a stop-motion animation film about Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. Jack stumbled onto Christmas Town and tried his best to be Santa Clause by bringing it to his town with the residents of bats, goblins and ghouls to help him be successful. Unfortunately, for Jack, this creates confusion and he runs into his own realization about who he truly is. It’s debatable whether this movie is a Halloween or Christmas film, but it works coincidentally for both holidays. This is a fun fantasy film to bring holiday cheer, with a pleasant soundtrack list that you can sing-along during the entire Halloween and Christmas season.

Where Can I  Find It?: Disney Channel October 21, 2018, October 22, 2018; Hulu

Whether you are into the Halloween season or not, these movies are a great choice to add to your horror film list. The best part is, you can conveniently access each movie from the comfort of your own home. So, invite a few friends, order a pizza and pick a scary or not so scary film to watch and everyone will be in for a treat!
