The model off-duty style has been a trend that has taken over fashion in the last couple of years. Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, the Hadids and other supermodels sport this style of clothing all the time. The key to the perfect M.O.D. look is simplicity. It’s all about looking effortlessly put together (even if it took some effort), so adding too many pieces or embellishments ruins the whole aesthetic.
Achieving this style can seem intimidating, but it’s really not. All you need is a few basic pieces that you can mix and match. Here are my recommendations of what to make sure you have:
1. A Pair of Good Jeans in Every Wash!
Having the perfect pair of jeans can really elevate any look and they are also the perfect base of an outfit. Whatever color top you decide to put on, it should match one of your pairs of jeans. The fit is up to you, just make sure you have ones that feel comfortable.
2. Neutral Colored Cropped or Tank Tops
Having a cropped or tank top in these three basic colors is a lifesaver; they are the perfect layering pieces and can be dressed up or down based on the occasion. Make sure you get a variety of colors, but the neutral colors are a good place to start! Black, white and grey are always handy to have, but consider adding in taupe or chocolate brown to your collection as well!
3. The Perfect Leather Pants
Leather pants have been having a good year, let me tell you. It feels like they were the must-have item of 2020, and continue to be this year. I recommend starting with a pair of black faux-leather pants before moving onto brown or tan, only because it matches with more things. This really is no simple task however, I bought several pairs before I found my holy grail – it’s all about fit and comfort! Mine are from Princess Polly and are said to be dupes of the Melina pant from Aritzia. If you’re in the market for a pair, I would recommend those ones! Leather pants effortlessly elevate an outfit and make it look a little more sophisticated, so definitely a necessity.
4. A Few Oversized Jackets
If I love anything in my closet, it’s my oversized jackets; having the right ones is really a lifesaver when you’re not sure how to elevate an outfit just a little more. My recommendations on where to start are, a faux leather coat, a plaid or printed shacket, and a neutral colored bomber. I own one of each and wear them constantly.
5. White and Black Shoes
Take it from someone who owns many (maybe too many) pairs of shoes: the ones that get the most use are my white Air Force 1 Pixels and my chunky black boots from Zara. The style of shoe is really up to you, whether you like a heel or a more sporty look, but I’m telling you, having a good pair of white shoes and a good pair of black shoes will make your life a whole lot easier.
