Campus Cutie: Kristian Casem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

Three words to describe yourself?“Simple, thoughtful, optimistic.”

What activities do you do at Rutgers?“Casual Harmony (an all male a cappella group).”

Why do you do it, and what do you like about it?“Before coming into Rutgers, I knew I wanted to join an all-male a cappella group. In high school I was in the Harmenizers, a group that a couple of guys had organized to perform around the community and at school events. Overall the experience was so hilarious and unforgettable, so coming into college I naturally wanted to keep that feeling alive. Casual harmony looked like pretty cool dudes, so I auditioned (even though it took me two tries to make it in). Honestly, it was one of the best decisions I have made at rutgers. Holding concerts on campus, travelling to perform at other universities, being on stage at the international a cappella championship–it’s all so rewarding and also a great escape from the monotony of pharmacy school. Casual harmony is a brotherhood, and I feel very lucky to have had this experience.”

What motivates you in school to keep going and working hard?“I’m in my fourth year of pharmacy (6 year program) and it just gets harder from here. What keeps me going is my family–I owe my mom and dad so much. They have provided me with opportunity and love and support throughout my education, and the least I can do is work hard and show them that it was worth it. I’ve promised myself to repay them one day, to express the appreciation they truly deserve.”

How do you relax and unwind when everything is stressful?“Read fiction, play guitar, go to the gym, dance like a fool in my room”

Your proudest achievement?“Performing with CH in the semifinals of the 2014 International Championship of Collegiate A cappella. I have to admit, competing in the ICCA feels like starring in the movie Pitch Perfect. The competition is the same actual thing.

What do you like doing for fun or in your free time?“I brew coffee and espresso. I enjoy researching and trying new beans or techniques–anything that’ll make my coffee tastier. There’s a lot of learning, practice, and trial and error involved, and I love that.”

What is your dream job?“Barista at a specialty coffee shop, owning my own cafe.”

Favorite TV show? Favorite bands?“TV show: Breaking Bad. Music: Baths, Toro y moi.”

What advice would you give to underclassmen?“Cherish your friends. Be positive. Go to the gym.”

What would you say to other students looking to get involved on campus?“Don’t be afraid to try something new.”

What is one thing you’ve always wanted to do?“Travel outside the US, specifically Japan.”

What is your #1 goal this year“Squat twice my body weight.”
