Bernie Sanders Visits Rutgers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

On Sunday, May 8, Bernie Sanders came to Rutgers. The news broke fairly last minute, but, nevertheless, the student body was excited to host a presidential candidate.

I arrived at the RAC around 11:30am with a few friends to stand in an already long line. The atmosphere was incredible. People from all walks of life were at the rally; there were people of all ages, genders, and races present. While we waited the three hours for the doors to open, the sun began to shine on an eager and ever-growing crowd.

Once we were allowed inside, we were thoroughly searched by the Secret Service. Although we knew we had nothing to be worried about, their presence was still intimidating. Past security, we made our way to the floor of the RAC and began our wait for Senator Sanders to make his appearance.

Around 5pm, a man from the Sanders campaign addressed the crowd, expressing his disbelief at the size of the audience. After a few more quick speeches, Bernie and his wife emerged onto the stage. The crowd erupted. The moment they were waiting for was finally here.

In an hour long speech, Bernie Sanders discussed the main issues he aims to address if elected president. Because the crowd was mostly college students, he spent a good portion of his time conferring his ideas about making public college tuition free and reducing the debt of college graduates. The rally attendees clapped and cheered along with Sanders as he explained his goals for the education system.

Senator Sanders also communicated his ideas about restoring democracy in America, which he says he will accomplish by removing Big Money from politics and overturning the Citizens United Supreme Court decision. He also addressed expanding Social Security, establishing a living wage, and creating a fair immigration policy. Bernie also discussed his intention to close the wage gap and fight gender inequality.

Parts of Bernie’s speech required audience participation. When the crowd answered the questions correctly, Bernie remarked that we were “a smart bunch” and that Rutgers was “a fantastic university.” These comments were met with loud applause and cheering from the audience.

Overall, the day was an amazing experience. Being able to see a presidential candidate in person was something I will never forget.
