Things We Can Learn from Each SATC Character

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Sex and the City is the type of show that once you start watching, you simply can’t get enough of. An ensemble of four, strong-willed females living their dreams in New York City that freely talk about sex and relationships with no shame? Talk about Girl Power! This show chronicles the many life lessons women face throughout their 20s and 30s, and I’m a firm believer that we can all learn or, at least, relate to one thing from each main character and their endeavors. Wildly different, yet all equally important in each other’s lives, the women of Sex and the City prove that friendships mean the world to women of all variations.

***Disclaimer: While I do believe this show could have been incredibly more diverse in sexuality, race, ethnicities, and more, I believe it spoke volumes for the time that it was released (in the late 90s). Feminism was still dead to the mainstream during this time, so a show like this inspired the new wave of modern feminism that many of us know today. But, I can’t deny that a reboot featuring a much more diverse cast would be EVERYTHING!!!***

Time to meet the ladies!

Tends to take on the stress of her friends yet remains incredibly loyal. Passionate about love, and never gives up on what she believes in. She is the happy-medium of this wild group and doesn’t care about her own clumsiness. She tends to laugh at her mistakes, which is admirable. Not afraid to embrace herself.

EXUDES confidence in all forms. Shows it’s totally normal to have casual hookups, and that it’s totally natural to want sex. We shouldn’t feel shame regarding our bodies or sex. She also embraces change. She’s unapologetic about who she is, even if others look down on her.

She shows that it’s okay to want a storybook ending, but it’s also okay if it never happens (you can be incredibly happy without it). She is a strong believer that love can solve all of your problems, which includes love for your gal pals!

  • What we can learn:

Arguably the most sarcastic of the group, she has a total hardass exterior with a soft and loveable interior. She isn’t afraid to show her wild side when need be. Proves that you can work for what you want and still be happy. Other people don’t negate your happiness and success.

  • What we can learn:
    • It’s perfectly okay to be sensitive and show love, even when we’ve been through a lot.

    • “I just want to enjoy my success, not apologize for it.

When together, the Sex and the City ladies are unstoppable. These friends support each other with little to no drama despite their wildly different perspectives on life. The main takeaway from each character that you should grasp from this show is to love yourself and love each other. You are never alone in your battles, regardless if you think otherwise. These four women were never afraid, to be honest with one another, and because of this, their relationships remained unscathed and stronger than ever. Friends can become an even better family, and these relationships are the ones that you will cherish for the rest of your life. Most importantly, the women of Sex and the City individually and collectively highlight the journey of life, rather than the endpoint, which is something I believe everyone should keep in mind. Remember: Life is a marathon, not a sprint. So, grab your best running shoes, march on, and flaunt that internal goddess!
