Spotlight: Kayla Harrison and “In Search of the Write Direction”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Kayla Harrison, 22 and a Senior at Rowan University, majoring in Early Childhood Education created a blog, In Search Of The Write Directionwhich focus on a variety of things. Harrison’s blog consists original poetry, short stories and other special writing. Kayla started blogging about her talent which is writing in February of last year 2015. The blog began as an assignment for one of her writing classes. She and her classmates had to create a blog that showcased their niche. Kayla’s niche was writing and she said, “I absolutely loved creating this blog, that I continued writing after the class was finished!

The most challenging thing for maintaining Kayla’s blog is finding people to read her posts because she believes that not many people care for writing. She says, “I have to make my posts interesting and relatable.” Kayla thinks blogging is a great tool to communicate, especially in the 21st century because of how frequently technology is used. Also, blogging provides first hand accounts of events. However, she does not think that blogging is journalism. Journalism is writing about an event or person, etc., with multiple perspectives and facts taken into account. Blogging is more opinion based, and biased. If blogging became more of a journalistic writing, it may work in the future; but she does not know if people would be able to decide what is fact and what is not if they read it on a blog.

The most exciting aspect of running Kayla’s blog is that she says it’s hard to pick just one thing, but the top two most exciting things are actually writing the blog posts and designing the blog/changing it to stay current. Kayla stated, “I had so much fun designing the look of my blog, and I love changing the content around to make it more interesting for readers.”

Kayla’s advice for others trying to maintain a beat/blog they must research other blogs! It is so important to look at what others are saying so that you can make your blog different from what’s already out there. More people will eventually visit your blog if you provide a different perspective or feature different content. Kayla says she likes the Rowan’s Innovative Women blog by Ashley Oliver and implied, “I love that your blog features women from Rowan University because although I attend, I will never be able to meet everyone who goes there. Your blog allows me to get to know these innovative women and get inspired by the things they are doing.”

I am a Writing Arts major at Rowan University. Poetry is my best friend. One day, I hope to be a successful writer for a popular magazine in NYC. My dream is to travel to Paris, London, and Rome to explore and write about my experiences there.
