More Than a Look: Grammys Fashion as Feminine Expression

At first glance, the notorious Grammys red carpet looks like quite the display- statement gowns, dramatic presentations, and endless commentary about who wore what best. However, the 2026 Grammys felt less competitive and more conversational, as each outfit displayed some sort of expression. What female artists wore was based on more than how they looked; they were communicating their confidence and rebellion through clothing. This has created a worldwide visual representation of modern femininity that is represented through the red carpet.

For female artists, clothing is an element of self-expression that is often overlooked, given the attention they receive as artists in such a competitive music industry. At the Grammys this year, many artists appeared to dress for themselves, rather than to achieve a shocking or fashionably ‘on trend’ look. They used their clothing to narrate their evolution through both their personality and the professional world.

When confidence and rebellion combine

Rebellion and confidence were two of the most consistent themes seen during the event. Chappell Roan is a standout at the Grammys red carpet each year with her unique looks that express her personality. generated most of the conversation by wearing a sheer, unconventional dress that created the illusion of being completely topless. However, there were also several design elements utilized to showcase the notion of exposure.

Dressing in a manner of gaining approval- this outfit screamed: I create my own boundaries! This outfit went way beyond shock value; it stated personal freedom within the industry of policing women’s bodies along with their choices.

Another head turner on the red carpet was Heidi Klum. Falling right into the same category as Chappell, she made a dramatically bold impression in a nude molded latex dress that contoured her body as if it were a second layer of skin. She used her creativity to erase the boundaries set between fashion and sculpture while depicting a universal fact- you do not need to provide the ‘traditional’ coverage or style to appear self-assured.

Healing and personal growth

Some artists also embraced a sense of personal evolution through their fashion choices. Olivia Dean, who received the award at the 2026 Grammys for Best New Artist, transitioned from rising star to award-winning artist in her dramatic, two-tone Chanel gown. The sequined top of the dress, accompanied by an eye-catching white skirt with feathers, was classy and represented her music, along with her personality, perfectly. The combination she chose of glitz and softness could also be seen to represent her journey as an artist, thus far.

Sabrina Carpenter, a two-time Grammy winner at last year’s 2025 Grammys, showcased this moment through design as well. Although she unfortunately came out empty-handed during the 2026 awards while being up six nominations, she certainly caught the eyes of fans and the press. Her stunning Valentino dress gave a feel of old Hollywood glamour while still representing the modern style and youth. The dreamy nature of this gown encapsulated the idea of embracing your own story while still moving forward.

These types of choices were not only beautiful, but made quite a statement that self-acceptance and growth can be both beautiful and powerful when it comes to confidence.

Challenging the Femininity standards

Miley Cyrus, one of the most recognized female artists of all time, who is also a three-time Grammy winner through the years, is refining the traditional red carpet fashion trends for females. This year, she showed off her black leather outfit with hints of gold detailing. Looking at other female artists, Cyrus is truly creating a statement against being constantly feminine and wearing extravagant gowns to every event. Doing so shows other artists and the public that being comfortable being different is one of the most important aspects of having that celebrity confidence.

Billie Eilish’s looks through her career has been an example of her continually going against traditional unwritten rules of the red carpet for females. She expresses her unique style by wearing oversized styles that focus mostly on comfort and staying in control rather than being restricted to only one standard style. As Eilish’s look reinforced the concept of women being in control of their own bodies, it depicts the fashion industry as an expression of an individual woman’s autonomy. The way she wore and presented her bold look did not exemplify an attempt to hide who she really was; rather, it expresses femininity on her own terms and what it means to her.

Looking past the “Best Dressed” lists

Naturally, the stylists and critics will continue to compile lists of nonsense of best and worst-dressed celebrities until the end of time. Although I am not a stylist, I will also continue to critique celebrities’ outfits at the Grammys, and I’m almost certain you will too! At the 2026 Grammys, however, the most important aspect of fashion was not the top-ranking looks but rather the significance behind those rankings.

Fashion was used as a medium of communication, including through fashion. The women on the red carpet wore fashion to express themselves and challenge one another towards more confidence. Artists feed off each other’s confidence since every last one of them wants to be the best and most recognized in the industry. To them, their careers are a competitive sport, and so are their red carpet looks! In an age where visual and cultural storytelling means nearly as much as it sounds to people, those were the absolute strongest elements of the Grammys fashion experience in 2026.

I am currently a sophomore at Rowan University, majoring in Journalism with a minor in Sports Communications and Media. Growing up, I always had a strong interest in sports, which led me to want to pursue a career as a sports journalist or broadcaster after graduation! I would ideally love to work with a professional organization wether it be the MLB, NHL, etc.

Outside of studying and school work, you'll probably find me with my family and or friends, shopping, traveling, or at a coffee shop!
