Friends since the first day: Alyssa Cooney and Kaylin DeSantos

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Alyssa Cooney and Kaylin DeSantos freshman year: 2011/2012

Alyssa Cooney and Kaylin DeSantos junior year: 2013/2014

Alyssa Cooney and Kaylin DeSantos, roommates in an off-campus house at Rowan, have been friends since the first day of school freshman year. It’s now almost the end of their junior year and they still do almost everything together as well as with their other four roommates (which includes myself.)  Here’s a little more information about them and hopefully you are as lucky as they are to be best friends with one of the first people you meet in college.

Alyssa:

Age: 20

Year: junior

Major: Communication Studies, Marketing and Advertising double minor

Sign: Taurus

Campus involvement: Relay for Life Committee member, Unified Sports, Lambda Pi Eta member

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

“ People watching in the caf is really fun to do. Especially if you’re like us and end up staying in the caf talking way long after we finish eating. I also just love campus in general when it’s nice out because everyone is outside and happy and doing things!”

What friendship advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

“There weren’t very many people from my hometown who came to Rowan with me when I was a freshman and of the people who did come, I didn’t know that well so I was forced to make new friends. I think it’s almost better that way because at college you make friends everywhere and freshman year is the most crucial time to branch out and meet new people. All my roommates now are girls I met at some point during my freshman year whether it be at freshman orientation or girls who lived on the same floor as me in the dorms. Friends come and go, but if you find good ones, they will definitely stay with you throughout your college experience.”

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

“I still don’t know what color my hair is even though I’ve never dyed it because some people think it’s red, some think it’s blonde, and some think it’s brunette. I’ve started calling it strawberry blonde brunette!

What’s on your senior year bucket list?

“Hopefully go on spring break next year with my roommates!”

Kaylin:

Age: 20

Year: junior

Major: Psychology, Criminal Justice minor

Sign: Leo

Campus involvement: Relay for Life Committee member, Rowan Phonathon caller, Help Hotline, Psi Chi member

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

“The student center patio. I like how there’s never a dull moment and especially when they play music! it instantly makes everyone happier! I’m also partial to mimosa since I have so many memories in that building and everyone feels like family.”

What friendship advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

“It sounds cliche, but to be yourself. be friendly and be yourself and you’ll be amazed how many amazing friends you’ll meet. it really is that simple! the college world is so much bigger than your little high school bubble, you just have to put yourself out there.”

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

“I have two baby teeth still and I was in Paris on my sixteenth birthday.”

What’s on your senior year bucket list?

“Senior year bucket list: I want to savor every minute of senior year, go to every sporting event I possibly can, enjoy every free event, just appreciate everything. My friends, my house, Rowan in general, and even my classes! Living it up is my main priority senior year.”
