Five things that would have changed the trajectory of my entire semester.
1. Say yes!
Even when it’s scary, I wish I said yes to every new experience and opportunity. It’s easier to decide something isn’t for you in the future than it is to regret not taking an opportunity.
2. AttenDance matters
Skipping class to get a few extra hours of sleep is not worth it when you have to go to class the week of Thanksgiving when everyone else who saved their absences gets to go home. Tough it out for future you!
3. The gym isn’t a distraction
When I would have hours of work ahead of me, I used to think the gym was avoiding work and procrastinating. In reality, it helps clear my mind and stay focused.
4. Office hours aren’t scary
I would be so nervous to meet with my professors after hours to catch up on work or answer questions. Once I built up the courage, I realized how helpful those meetings are and I scheduled meetings with all my professors.
5. Friendship is about effort, not distance
I learned that friendships require effort and commitment. It doesn’t matter if you are next door or miles away.
There’s always room for improvement
Having regrets means that you learned from your experience and mistakes. It is a sign that you’re growing, and that in itself is something to be proud of. We will always have idealized versions of “what could have been”, but it is much more productive to put that energy into making the best of this moment and the future.
