The Vagina Monologues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

Friday night was the much anticipated Vagina Monologues. Every year College Feminists puts together this fund raising performance to benefit the Bethany House. This year it was directed by Rachel Li and Zena Levan. Leading up to the event I was frequently asked, “What are the Vagina Monologues anyway?” Well, exactly as it sounds, the Vagina Monologues is an episodic play (ie a series of monologues) written by Eve Ensler focused on vaginas. The play has a vast scope, focused on the different issues many women face regarding their sexuality. Eve Ensler interviewed hundreds of women, atypically asking them only questions about their vaginas. She asked everyone what their vagina would wear, what their vagina would say, and various questions regarding their sexual history, orientation, and overall relationship with their vagina. Some of the monologues are compilations of overarching themes (such as the hair down there) and others are based on one woman’s particuarly moving story. The show was rauchy, triggering, hilarious, bold, and heartbreaking. If you missed it, there’s always next year.
