A Makeup Addict’s Shopping Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

I know you’re out there, makeup addicts, and I know you feel the struggle. Shopping for makeup is both the best and worst thing in the world: the pretty products make your heart sing, but your wallet holds you back. We all have the same experiences when we walk into an Ulta, Sephora, or makeup aisle:

1. The Entrance

You came in to buy one thing, and that’s what you’re going to do.

2. Walking right towards what you came for…

You are denying the inevitable the whole time. “Okay, just don’t look at the contour kits. Yes, they’re pretty, but I can’t afford them. Avoid eye contact. I came for mascara, and that’s all I’m buying.”

3. Making an excuse to look around more

“Well, Mom’s birthday is coming up, and she needs blush. Let me see what they have…”

4. Seeing some ~~AMAZING~~ deal…

And you’re done for. “Buy one get one free matte lipsticks?? I mean, I’m losing money if I don’t take advantage of that now!”

5. Letting your inner instincts take over

As soon as you allow yourself one extra thing, it’s game over. You grab more and more things as they catch your eye. But who can resist such pretty packaging?

6. The Inner Tally

*begins calculating everything in your cart*

And then you immediately *but reluctantly* put a few of the less desirable items back.

7. The Wait

As you wait to cash out, you realize that although you’ve grabbed way more than you need to buy already. Even so, you can’t help but look at the travel-sized goodies they have along the checkout…

8. Cashing Out

A mixture of joy and guilt overcome you as you see the amount rising, until you finally swipe your card with mixed feelings. You try to remember that you’re worth the occasional splurge as you repeat the mantra, “Treat yo self.”

9. The Walk Out

Triumphant and glamorous, you walk towards your car, eager to don all the things you just bought. Although it cut into your budget a little, you can’t help but be excited.
