Fun Facts: Oscar Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

Oscar Fun Facts

Hollywood’s most important event is this Sunday evening, and I thought write about
some fun facts I found:

1) This year presents two of the youngest and oldest nominees ever, in one
category: Quvenzhane Wallis, nominated for Beasts of the Southern Wild, is
nine years old, while Emmanuelle Riva, nominated for Amour, are up for Best
Actress. Riva is actually turning 86 on Sunday, the day of the Oscars.
2) While officially known as the Academy Awards, apparently not this year – it’s
just Oscars. The Academy has decided to rebrand it.
3) This is the first year in a very long time that the Oscars are not being held at
the Kodak Theatre – our beloved, Rochester born company is bankrupt, and
had to pull out of sponsorship.
4) John Williams, nominated for Best Original Score for Lincoln, has more Oscar
Nominations than any other living person – a whopping 48. The only person
with more overall is Walt Disney, who tops it off with 59.
5) The menu was released for the Governor’s Ball, the formal after party that
follows the awards show, and it included, among many delicacies, 10 pounds
of edible gold dust.

Frankly, there are a lot more important issues going on in the world besides the
Oscars and celebrity gossip. But every now and then it’s nice to take a break from
the current problems plaguing our world, and our own personal struggles, and just
be entertained by the most glamorous night of the year.
