Unappetizing Truths: Calorie Infested Appetizers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rider chapter.
Living on campus and having to eat Daly’s food three times a day, going out is not only a deserved treat, but definitely necessary after a while. Going out to eat at a restaurant should certainly be an indulgent experience, because after all, look at what’s on the menu at Daly’s the next day! Yet and still, while it’s healthy to splurge every now and then, you still have to be careful when eating out.

Have you ever thought that by eating two appetizers for a dinner meal that you could save money instead of going for an entrée? Yes, we all have done it or at least considered it, right? But while you may be saving on shelling out cash at that moment, unfortunately in the long run you’ll be paying for it in a different way.

Take Applebee’s for instance. There’s one no more than ten minutes away from campus on Route One. For that reason, it is a place that generally receives a good amount of Rider visitation. That’s why I think it is crucial to check out these calorie and grams of fat counts. (While you read on, keep in mind that even when you are splurging, a meal that is considered as dinner shouldn’t be more than seven hundred calories.)

Classic buffalo boneless wings are usually a favorite, but guess what? They have 1,160 calories and 69 grams of fat. If you’re feeling some sweetness and you go for the honey BBQ add 80 more calories, but take away 14 grams of fat. Another two of the top calorie-infested options on the appetizer menu are the chicken quesadilla grandé and chili cheese nachos, which rank it at 1440 and 1, 690. Just imagine you went for the chicken quesadilla grandé and the chili cheese nachos. If your math is as good as mine, you’re looking at about 3,130 calories! That’s over a thousand more than a healthy meal plan for a whole day!

Do you realize that a lot of these are more than steak and some chicken dinners? Think about this because as we all know, dinner isn’t usually the last meal we as college students eat! Chain restaurants are great because you usually can get a good amount of food for a really great price, perhaps even enough to save for lunch the next afternoon. However, you should proceed with caution when you are browsing your menus next time.

Don’t shrug your shoulders and think that this is too hard to be aware of what foods you are eating, especially since places like Applebee’s and many other chain restaurants have marks on their menu’s the illustrate to you the healthier options and even separate lower-calorie menus altogether. No one can afford to be lazy or nonchalant when it comes to his or her health. Even if it may be annoying and may take some time getting used to in the beginning, we promise you that it’s one of those things that are worth it.
