Simple and Inexpensive Ways to Decorate your Dorm or Apartment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Richmond chapter.

If you scroll through Instagram or Tumblr during the first few weeks of school, your timeline will probably be flooded with people posting pictures of their perfectly decorated dorm room or apartment. Although it may look complicated or expensive, here are five cheap and simple ways that you can help to make your living space more Instagram worthy:

  1. Tapestry

Tapestries are a great way to decorate because they’re simple to hang, and in most cases can cover your entire wall so you don’t have to worry about buying any more wall decor items. Although they can get pretty expensive from stores like Urban Outfitters, you can find many on Amazon for less than $20.

2. Area Rug

Area rugs just have a way of making a room cozier and feel more like home, especially if your dorm or apartment doesn’t already come carpeted. Fur area rugs seem to be the latest trend right now in home decor. Just make sure you keep up with vacuuming to keep your rug looking nice!

3. Lights

String lights are one of the best things to decorate with because they’re so inexpensive, and really add a personal feel to any room. Whether you use them to frame a photo display on your wall or just let them stand alone, they’re sure to make your wall look Instagram worthy!

4. Canvas Artwork

Whether you buy artwork that’s already made or do a DIY project with a canvas and paint from a craft store, artwork helps to make a room feel more like home. Picking art pieces with colors that match the theme of your room will help to create a look that is put together. Stores like Primark sell canvases for less than $20 each!
