Because of our privileged position as Rice University students, we should seek to support victims of the storm through donations of time, supplies, and – if possible – money. Here are a few practical ways you can help Houston regain its strength:
If you’d like to volunteer:
- Volunteer at the George R. Brown Convention Center – now being used as an emergency shelter – through the Red Cross
- Volunteer with the Houston Food Bank
- Volunteer with the Montrose Center
- Volunteer at the NRG Center
- Visit http://volunteerhouston.org/ for more volunteer opportunities
If you’d like to donate supplies:
If you’d like to make a monetary donation:
- Donate to the Houston Food Bank
- Donate to the United Way Relief Fund
- Donate to the Montrose Center’s LGBTQ Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund
- Donate to the Salvation Army
Other ways you can help:
- Petition local businesses to offer a storewide discount in exchange for nonperishable goods brought in
- If you are affiliated with a local religious organization, encourage its leaders to take formal action
- If you belong to a student organization on campus, make volunteering and/or collecting supplies a group activity
- Inform your peers of the various ways in which they can join Hurricane Harvey relief efforts
