Study Savvy: Top Places to Study On Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

At Rhodes, we love our beautiful library and the Middle Ground, but sometimes Rhodes students need a change of study scenery to find the motivation to be productive. The Middle Ground and the library can get too busy and loud, especially during exams. When the library starts to become the Middle Ground, and the Middle Ground starts to become a frat party, it is time for a new setting.  Check out these treasures of study spots on campus to find some quiet to concentrate on your work.

Top Ten Study Spots at Rhodes

1.) Rhea Lounge

Rhea is usually used for meetings of organizations, but if there is not a meeting occurring it is available for studying! This room is small, quiet, comfy and superb for all-nighters. It is a good alternative to a study room in the library if you are trying to get group work done as well.

2.) Armstrong Room (4th Floor Burrow)

If you want to study in luxury, the Armstrong Room should be your study haven. Important meetings are held in here (hence the leather chairs, huge conference tables, etc.), but if it’s not occupied then claim it! It is the best place available to study with multiple people.

3.) Porch of Briggs (in front of the Bookstore)

When it is beautiful outside, the last place you want to be is stuck inside the library. Take your books to the porch of Briggs and enjoy the sunshine in one of the rocking chairs or at a table. If you really want to the soak up the sun, take it a step further and bring a towel to make a spot on Barret lawn.

4.) The Lair

This one sounds crazy, but during dead times for meals, the Lair is not a bad place to study. The left side when you walk in has nice couches that are pretty vacant later in the evening, and if it is nice out use the tables outside!

5.) Academic Buildings

As long as you have your fob, you should be able to have twenty-four hour access to most all of the academic buildings and you can usually find a classroom to do homework in. If you have a big presentation coming up, practicing in a classroom can build your confidence for it and an academic building is your best study option.

6.) FJ

FJ is really quiet at night, and there are some lovely couches near the entrance for student use. There is also a pretty rose garden outside, if you prefer to work there.

7.) EV lodge

Even if you do not live in EV, you can still use EV lodge. The lodge is spacious and excellent for holding study meetings. If you want a break, there is also a massive TV that is perfect for watching movies.

8.) The Math Library (in Ohlendorf)

If you are not a math student, you probably avidly avoid Ohlendorf, but the math library on the second floor is a great place to study. There is a gorgeous spiral staircase to a second level of the library where there are computers available for students to use.

9.) Burrow

This building is available through fob access to study at night. The basement offers study rooms and there are computers available by Rhodes Express. Burrow is an awesome alternative to the library when it gets too packed.

10.) The Pool

If you like to tan then multitask! You can go lay out and study simultaneously! Just don’t get so immersed in your work that you burn!

I am a senior English major at Rhodes College with a double minor in History and Religious Studies. I am really passionate about studying abroad and writing!. Currently, I am a social media and advertising intern for Mid South Wedding Guide and I hope to attend graduate school to get further degrees in English literature. I love books, making new friends, art and coffee.
