From the Runway to Rhodes: New York Fashion Week (Part 1)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

As always, this year’s fall New York Fashion Week delivered many new and innovating runway looks. What was unique about this fashion week was the brilliant way in which designers re-vamped old trends, giving them new life. The week, dated September 9th through September 17th, showcased anticipated trends for the spring and summer of 2016.

This fall’s Fashion Week was obsessed with 70’s styles. From parachute pants to jumpers to retro prints, the runway was a blast from the past. Some styles looked straight out of That 70’s Show. Although bringing back the 70’s is not necessarily a new trend, this fall’s runway brought a new vigor to the vintage look. Diane von Furstenberg brought a series of updated jumpsuits and rompers to her show, using bold patterns and pale colors to give her looks a modern twist.

Tommy Hilfiger’s runway show was one of my absolute favorites of the week. His outfits reflected a Jamaican influence, combined with a vintage flare. The accessories perfectly balanced out the abundance of vibrant colors in the outfits. The striped hat with the bohemian dress and chucks dresses down a classic 70’s inspired look in a new way.

Further pushing the 70’s theme, everyone is still raving about all things fringe. Although fringe has been back for a while, designers are still crazy about the trend and have found new ways to style it. Rachel Zoe designed these two beautiful head-to-toe fringe looks. Rachel displayed how differently fringe could be used; the coat is bold and vintage, while the dress is sleek and sexy.

Altuzarra used subtle fringe on their accessories, bringing a boho flare to otherwise modern, sleek looks.

That’s all for this post but tune in next week for the “part two” of my post on New York Fashion Week!
