Rites of Spring 2016 Lineup!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

Get pumped because Rites of Spring is THIS WEEKEND!  We have several wonderful acts coming this weekend, and the weather looks much better than last year!  Without further ado, here is the lineup for Rites this weekend:

Friday April 15:

Cigs Inside @ 7:00

No bio available.

V SliCK @ 7:45

“V Slick is a collaborative group that’s made up of the Flying V’s (Jay [Clinton], Ladd [Caballero], Brad [McCullough], and I [Cullen Williams]) and Slick (Roc [Sherrell]). After hearing Roc at Battle of the Bands last year, the Flying V’s were super interested in making music with him and reached out to him about it this year. We learned a few of his songs and he wrote verses for a couple of ours, and the musical chemistry has just been really nice. The sound is (in my opinion) a cool combination of the bluesy rock that V’s play mixed with Roc’s Hip Hop. I think a kind of exemplary instance of the sound we’re going for is in one song where the instruments gradually build in dynamics under a sixteen bar verse that Roc raps before everything kind of explodes with a guitar solo from Brad.” ~ Cullen Williams

MisterWives @ 9:00

“MisterWives are an indie pop band based in New York City.  Formed in 2012 around the core trio of singer/keyboardist Mandy Lee, bassist William Hehir, and drummer Etienne Bowler, they have an unusual sound that combines elements of synth pop, folk, and indie rock, falling somewhere between the qurky dance-pop of No Doubt and the pastoral folk-rock of Of Monsters and Men.  After adding guitarist Marc Campbell and multi-instrumentalist Dr. Blum, the group began recording its debut EP, Reflections, which was released on New York indie Photo Finish Records in early 2014.  With just one EP and some demos to their name, MisterWives have garnered much buzz among major music publications like Interview, Paste, and MTV Buzzworthy.  Their debut LP Our Own House was released in February 2015.” ~ from their Spotify bio

Saturday April 16:

PreauXX @ 8:15

“PreauXX (pronounced “pro”) has been quickly ascending in the ranks of the next generation of hip hop artists to look out for. Born in New Orleans, LA and raised in Memphis, PreauXX’s charming charisma and aggressive wordplay gained him a local notoriety that exploded after enrolling in the University of Memphis in 2008.  With a positive message aimed at inspiring listeners to seek the most out of life, PreauXX’s music began opening doors at a rapid pace at the university. After teaming with producers Alexander Odell and IMAKEMADBEATS and releasing two mixtapes (2010’s To Kill A Mockingbird and 2011’s Love Jones), PreauXX dropped out of college to pursue his career in music. After forming the creative coalition TRDON with Odell, his Mockingbird Mondays EP was prominently featured on blogs KevinNottingham, Grammy.com, and iLLMaterial, as well as publications Commercial Appeal and Memphis Flyer.  In 2013, PreauXX expanded his reach onto a national level, wowing fans at the A3C and SXSW festivals all while building the TRDON name into a Memphis staple with guerrilla marketing/branding and city-wide parties, including the Cooper Young Festival where he performed for a 10,000+ audience.  [In 2014, PreauXX and his team secured] a dual deal with Great South Bay Music Group to release his Die Winning EP with digital distribution through E1 Records.” ~ from his Facebook page

T-Pain @ 9:30

“Tallahassee-based MC and vocalist T-Pain (born Faheem Najm) came up in a rap group called Nappy Headz but went pro as a solo R&B artist after he recorded ‘I’m F**ked Up,’ a personal take on Akon’s Top Ten hit ‘Locked Up.’  Akon heard the track and took T-Pain under his wing with a contract on his Jive-distributed Konvict Muzik label.  Produced and written mostly by T-Pain, Rappa Ternt Saga was released in December 2005, led by the Top 20 single, ‘I’m Sprung.’  Ephiphany followed in June 2007.  His 2008 album, Thr33 Ringz, was conceptually based around the circus and played up the singer’s ‘Ringleader Man’ persona.  rEvolver, which followed in 2011, was another conceptual effort, this time putting the focus on how much T-Pain has evolved since his previous effort.” ~ from his Spotify bio’

Hopefully seeing this stellar lineup gets everyone super hyped for this weekend!! Be safe and have fun!

Hi! I'm Sarah Johnson, and I am the Campus Correspondent for Her Campus Rhodes! I am a senior at Rhodes from Little Rock, AR. I am a Music major, I am a Research and Writing Fellow in the Curb Institute and I sing in the Women's Chorus. In my spare time I like to sleep, eat various snack foods, and watch beauty bloggers on YouTube. My main area of expertise is fashion. My personal style is definitely on the hip side of things, and my pattern of choice is stripes. Thirfting is my number one passion, and I hope to never pay full price for an item of clothing until I can actually afford it. I’ve recently noticed that I almost exclusively wear neutrals, which I am trying to remedy with the purchase of color, but it’s not working very well for me. I hope you all enjoy the articles I write and remember to always be cute!
