An Open Letter to Women of Color

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

Dear women of color

We must see the possibility amongst ourselves

Please I beg you, disregard everything that has become normal

You are beautiful.

You don’t have to fetishize your cinnamon, blueberry, macadamia, or pecan colored skin

You don’t have to hide the natural sway of your hips

Please I beg of you, don’t hide your smile

Especially cause it’s almost summer

And our skin will radiate brightly

Our spirit glorifies the masses and liberates the buried bones of our people

We are allowed to be angry

We are allowed to be the voices of our grandmothers, our aunts, our mothers

We are allowed to condemn the oppressive practices conducted by our oppressor(?)

We are not allowed to be defeated

Remember that we are interconnected through a sisterhood

Salvation, Strength, and Power run through our DNA, a place inaccessible to oppression,

I encourage you to practice self-care

I encourage you to stop seeking validation from the false complacency social media outlets tend to offer

I encourage you to be safe

I encourage you to join hands with your fellow sisters and resist against the trials you will face on an all-white campus

Most of all, I urge you to stay true to yourself.

Sincerely,

A Colored Girl
