An Ode to the Valentine Phantom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

Life is filled with many relationships

You’ve got the predetermined relationships with mother and a father

Whether they continue to flourish or diminish, they are the first we are given

Then comes the friendships, the ones we can choose

Endless conversations, some through verbal or silent communication, and the formation of bonds

But sometimes those friendships turn into something more

Sometimes, if you are truly lucky

They can become a time of neverending bliss: butterflies that flutter at a rapid pace, heart racing, mind tinkering

But what if you were led astray

What if it was all in your head? Am I the one who confused the situation? Did I think one way when in reality it was another?

Were the nights in which we talked for hours on end no more than beneficial to one party

Were you deceiving me

Did I deserve that treatment

While I lay in bed with my heart bleeding down my sleeve

You flourished and triumphed in my despair

My wins turned into yours

My ideas became yours

Are you the ventriloquist?

Was I but a mere puppet in your sideshow attraction? Or merely a lifeline?

You tore my heart? Fool me once, shame on you

Fool me twice shame on…
