Katy Perry’s Prism: Hit or Miss?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ramapo chapter.

Three years ago, Katy Perry released this personal FAV of mine, which made fans from all over fall in love with her beautiful voice.

The “Teenage Dream” singer seems to be showing of a more grown-up version of herself in her new album, which is unlike what we’ve seen of her in the past. Some songs are just purely brilliant, like her single “Roar” and new tune “Unconditionally,” while other songs fail to impress me.

“Roar” shows Perry’s resilience, and how she’s refusing to take crap from anyone—good lesson! “Unconditionally” shows how much Perry suffered post break-up from Russell Brand, and how she may feel too close to people. It’s an eye opener to her fans, who are given a peek at a deeper and more personal Perry. It’s a big switch from upbeat songs like “Firework.”

It may be an adjustment for fans, but Katy Perry is definitely in a transitional music phase, as she’s growing and becoming more of an adult artist whose willing to share.

On a lighter note, last month, the singer performed upbeat song “Dark Horse” at the iHeartRadio Festival. Similar in sound is “Walking on Air,” as they both touch on the house beats we’ve been hearing lately.

Time will only tell if her album stays on top, but no matter what, we still love you Katy!
