Watch This: Girls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Are you a college-aged girl who is still trying to find her identity, whatever that means?  Do you have no idea what you’re doing this weekend, let alone what you want to do for the rest of your life?  Are you still trying to figure out how to deal with guys and mostly failing at doing so?  If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then you need to be watching HBO’s Girls.  In its second season Girls follows the lives of four twenty-somethings as they unsuccessfully navigate life after college.  That includes ventures into jobs they’re not sure they really want, boys who they may want too much, and friendships that are evolving way too fast for anyone to keep up.

It is often referred to as the new and young Sex and the City, but that’s too inaccurate and only describes the show at the surface.  The ladies of Sex and the City were established in their careers and friendships, only dealing with the usual ups and downs which is life.  The one unknown in all the ladies life was love.  For the ladies of Girls everything is unknown.  They want to be the next Carrie Bradshaw, but they’re still trying to create a plan of action to get there.

One of the best things about Girls are the four main characters.  They’re fantastic, but only because they’re so incredibly flawed.  Hannah is too self-centered which creates problems in almost all of her friendships and relationships.  Marnie seeks unreachable perfection and is forever unsatisfied.  Shoshanna is too innocent for her own good.  Jessa puts on the act of a free spirit but breaks down when she ends up alone.  The girls are relatable in this way.  You’ve made some of the same mistakes they have that gets played out in each episode.

In a land of TV perfection Girls is a breath of fresh air.  So stop worrying about what you did last Saturday at Toad’s, the girls have probably done a lot worse.  They’re still trucking and so can you.  Tune into Girls, laugh, cringe and be reassured that even if you don’t know what you’re doing, no else does either.
