As a former college athlete, I remember our pregame mantra: “Look good, play good.” Yet, in the midst of my everyday endeavors, I didn’t realize until this week that I had forgotten the meaning of this phrase.
As I immersed myself within the University of Chicago community while attending the Her Campus’ College Fashion Week, I took note.
While most chalk up U Chicago to nothing more than the place “where fun comes to die,” they fail to realize the university’s “dress well, do well” mentality.
At U Chicago, these sartorially conscious students use their ubiquitous style to help ease the hours spent sifting through arduous materials in the library. Collectively, the U Chicago community believes if they dress well, they will do well in every endeavor. This mentality has become somewhat foreign to me, as I openly have conformed to Quinnipiac’s #basic mentality, one which I just hate to love.
So if you’re like me and are looking to conform to something other than Lululemon yogas and quarter-zip Patagonias, here are five easy ways to channel your inner genius. (And trust me…unlike my sorority’s chants insist, you won’t need to wear pink to make the boys to wink.)
1. Nail the uniform.
I had forgotten to realize the importance of a fresh mani until my bestie recently informed me that the first thing people notice about you is your hands. Polish those nails, collegiettes! You’ll look like a pro. (May I recommend my personal fave polish, Lincoln Park After Dark by OPI?)
2. Your boot-ies are made for walking.
I would live in my Tory Burch shearling boots if I could, but the prospect of potentially being welcomed into a uber-professional situation deters me from this bad habit. Instead of looking like you’re ready for bed—like I sometimes do—opt for a short-heeled bootie. You can be crazy and invest in Rag and Bones’ “Harrow” or opt for any of the look-a-likes.
3. Tights are right.
Chicago is freezing, which means tights are about the only chic option available. Whether they’re plain, patterned or striped, do it and do it right. (Bonus points to those of you who throw on some killer knee-highs to finish the outfit off.)
4. Skirt the issue.
It takes more time to talk yourself out of wearing the skirt than it does to simply put on the skirt and run off to class. Next time you are fighting the war in your closet—don’t worry…it’s a losing battle I face daily—remind yourself of Chanel’s wise words: It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.
5. Add a topcoat.
It’s all about the finishing touches. Sure, your minimalistic accessories are just as important to assure you’re dressing for success, but it’s your topcoat that makes the statement. Channel your inner Olivia Pope and opt for a trench coat or go for the must-have blanket style. Regardless of your selection, just remember to choose wisely.
That’s really it ladies! Just remember: when you dress well, you do well.
