October is nearing its end, which means Halloween is getting closer and closer. Through all my years at college, I have seen all different responses to Halloween ā mostly because I have gone through the entire spectrum of Halloween enthusiasm, and lack thereof. On this spectrum, I have observed three types of girls: 1. Extreme Halloween aficionados, 2. Girls with āMean Girlsā costume logic, and 3. The ālast minuteā costume girls. In this article, I will offer suggestions, ideas, and advice for any kind of girl on the Halloween Excitement Spectrum to make your Halloween a fabulous way to end October.
Extreme Halloween Aficionados
These are the girls who live and breathe for Halloween. They mark down their calendars for this one day
out of the year where you can dress up as anyone and anything you want. I have seen some crazy and intricate costumes while going to college, but these three were definitely the biggest crowd pleasers:
1. Avatar: Have you ever seen the movie Avatar? The one with all the strangely attractive blue people? Last year, I saw a girl who dressed as an avatar and really committed to her role. She wore a full body blue spandex suit and painted her face with blue paint. She wore a wig with two long dark braids going down to her waist, and even spoke with the same accent as they did in the movie. She definitely received some strange looks, but for the most part, everyone was very impressed and were lining up to take pictures with her. If you love being a Halloween attraction, this might be the costume for you. If Naomi Clark from 90210 can pull it off, then so can you!
2. Lady Gaga: This celebrityās everyday wardrobe looks like it has come from a Halloween fanaticās closet, so any one of her well-known looks would wow the crowd at the Halloween Party. You could try her bubble outfit, her hula-hoop and giant jack dress, one of her architecturally structured garbs, or if you are really daring, try her meat dress. Anyone of these outfits have a lot of components, need an attention to detail, and will draw all eyes on you as a Halloween pro.Ā
3. Cupcake: Although it may sound simple, dressing up as a cupcake is a huge crowd pleaser and can be done extremely embellished. My freshman year at college, I met a girl who dressed up as a cupcake, and actually put edible materials all over her. She crazy glued little, colorful jars onto her outfit that acted as the sprinkles on the cupcake. However, each jar contained a different candy topping that could go on a real cupcake. Incorporating candy into a Halloween costume may be a challenge, but it separates the Halloween costume experts and the amateurs.
āMean Girlsā Costume Logic
For those of you who have not seen the movie āMean Girls,ā the āMean Girlsā costume logic, is to wear lingerie with some sort of tails or ears and call yourself some sort of sexy animal. This can be acceptable and fun if it is done appropriately and tastefully. An example not to follow is a costume I saw a girl wear my sophomore year: She wore a bra, underwear, and a dog collar, and said she was a bitch for Halloween. Not only is this not funny, but it also gives college girls a bad image. My only concern for these costumes is that girls are only wearing them to look sexy for men. If we donāt want men to objectify us, then we shouldnāt objectify ourselves with sleazy costumes such as this. Some of the āMean Girlsā costumes I have seen that have been homeruns include the following:
1. Any kind of cat: Iāve seen girls wearing leopard print, tiger stripes, and all black to be the cat of their choice. Corsets are a great idea for the cat costume along with different colored and printed tights, a long tail, and cute ears to stick with a fabulous hair do.
2. Superhero: Any female superhero I have ever seen in any movie or comic book, is very sexy. Colorful spandex will be fun and whimsical, while showing off your womanly curves at the same time. Come to the rescue this Halloween and knock āem dead with your super costume powers.
3. Gymnast: Dressing up as a gymnast for Halloween is a great excuse to wear a cute one-piece bathing suit and call it a leotard. Gymnasts also get to wear sparkly makeup and get away with bringing a scrunchies back into style. Also, gymnasts have the cutest jackets ā a great idea if you are going to be outside for Halloween.
Last Minute Costume Girls
If you are like me, and many other college girls, you are extremely busy. Sometimes, Halloween can really sneak up on you, and there is just not enough time to put that much thought into a costume or go shopping for everything you need. These next couple of costumes are simple, quick ideas for all those girls who donāt have as much enthusiasm for Halloween, or simply do not have the time to go all out this year.
1. Sports player: Did you play a sport in high school? Or even now, in college? Take out your old cleats, knee pads, jerseys, or any other uniform essentials to dress up as any kind of sports player. Last year, I dressed up as a football player – I wore cleats, knee high socks, bootie shorts, and a patriots t-shirt. I even used mascara as the two black smears for under my eyes. Any kind of sports player is easy to do and a great way to save some money.
2. Flash dancer: Do you have leg warmers, spandex shorts, and a shirt you can wear off the shoulder? Then you are all set to be a flash dancer. Make your hair big and jump around, and you will be an authentic flash dancer, ready to dance Halloween away!
3. Soldier: Do you have anything camouflage ā shorts, pants, shirt? If you have anything army patterned or camouflage, then dressing up as a soldier from the army is a quick fix. Pair it with some cute black boots and dog tags, and you will have a clever and convenient Halloween costume.
Wherever you are on the Halloween Excitement Spectrum, you now have a variety of ideas for the best Halloween costumes. Although the ideas above are sure to be crowd favorites, the options for Halloween costumes are endless, and you should have fun with it. Halloween only comes around once a year, so why not make this year a Halloween to remember!
