“New Year, New You.” Yes, we all hear this corny saying with the start of the New Year and automatically think how unrealistic it is to become a new person. However, we all try to make these massive changes in our lives whether it’s exercising more, being more social or trying something new. The idea is to take baby steps. Start by making small changes in your life and you will gradually see rewarding results.

Maybe you want to lose a significant amount of weight, but it is important to know that it is not possible to lose it all within a month or even three. In order to accomplish your goal, begin to eat healthier and smaller portions. Also, start by exercising 20-30 minutes a day. Although you will not see immediate changes, you will be happy with the outcome in the long run and you will be able to continue with the healthier lifestyle.

Perhaps you wish to expand your social horizons. Yes, if you tend to be quiet and reserved, it may be difficult to meet new people. Make a point to go out with your roommates or girls across the hall. Come up with a goal to spark up a conversation with one new person every weekend. Also, take a chance and talk to someone new in class. You never know, a small study group or homework session may turn into a close-knit group of friends that you turn to every weekend.

If you want to try something new whether it’s something as simple as a yoga class or as extreme as traveling abroad, just do it! Stop letting that voice in your head prevent you from making a potentially life changing decision. Sometimes the things that scare you the most are the things that will make the biggest impact on your life and you will be forever grateful for.

So, when listening to everyone’s impractical New Year’s Resolutions, think about your own and create a realistic goal. Post it on your wall or in your closet so you see it every day and focus on who you want to be. If you start by making minor changes in your life, maybe they will lead to a better and “New You”.
