100 Reasons to Stay is a suicide prevention video aiming to help people realize that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and it can get better. We want people to realize that there are so many different aspects of life that are reasons to stay, you just have to open your eyes and become aware of them. This video is also there to encourage anyone simply having a bad day and needs some cheering up.
The video came out of a capstone project for our QU301 Seminar class. We chose to pick the topic of suicide because we know it is a prominent issue specifically surrounding students and we hoped that around finals time it would be helpful. Our teacher inspired us to create something other than an essay, so we took a creative route through not only video but also a twitter account and blog that correspond with our messages of hope and encouragement.
Lauren and I physically put the video together but this video could not have been made possible without the help of our QU community who held up the 100 different index cards and gave us ideas for what to write. Although me and Lauren executed the project, it was definitely a communal effort.
This was the most exciting news I have ever received! I am a HUGE Perez fan and check his website daily. To see the video on his page with positive feedback and hundreds of more views is a feeling that I can barely even describe… it was simply incredible!
Lauren and I are currently studying abroad right now but have discussed working on another video when we return back to QU. We certainly want to continue helping as many people as we can.
My advice to all is very cliche but true: one small step can make a huge difference. If you have a cause that you are passionate about, create something that will push it forward and raise even more awareness around the world because that is the only way to make a change. Also, take assignments given in our QU seminars seriously because you never know what can come of them!
