4 Ways to Say “Thank You” This Veteran’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Newsflash: it’s the first week of November.  That means turning the clocks back, brushing the dust off of the top of Ugg boxes, and embracing bearded men.  But it also means that Veteran’s Day is fast approaching.  And if there is ever a day to openly express your appreciation for those who have served this nation, it is November 11th.  Mark your calendars, collegiettes!

One of the simplest things you can do to thank service members of the United States Armed Forces is just that…thank them.  Simply say, “Thank you for your service” and mean it.  There is something intensely personal about looking a veteran in the eye and thanking him or her for making the decision to sacrifice for you and your fellow Americans.

Remember that men and women have fought and died for the fabulous freedoms that you enjoy every single day.  Don’t feel awkward about approaching someone who may be a complete stranger.  As someone who was raised in a family of veterans, I can promise you that nothing means more to them than knowing that their duties do not go unrecognized.

After you’ve said “thank you,” try one of these five other unique ways to show your support:

1. Maybelline New York Presents Cosmopolitan’s Kisses for the Troops

If you or somebody you know is going to be in the New York City area on Monday, November 12th, then get ready to pucker up!  Maybelline cosmetics and Cosmopolitan magazine are taking over Times Square for their fourth annual Kisses for the Troops campaign.  Those who arrive at the Maybelline tent will get a swipe of ColorSensational lip color before being prompted to plant one on a postcard that will then be sent to troops overseas.  Not only will our brave veterans get a perky pick-me-up, but Maybelline and Cosmo will donate $1 to the USO for every kiss they receive.  For more information, visit http://www.cosmopolitan.com/hairstyles-beauty/skin-care-makeup/about-cosmo-kisses

2. Heinz Ketchup: Our Turn To Serve

The H.J. Heinz Company and the Heinz Foundation originally teamed up with Wounded Warrior Project in 2011 to serve those who have served us, and have continued the campaign every November since.  Heinz ketchup bottles feature patriotic labels that encourage people to quickly scan a QR code using their smartphones and thus, send a “thank you” note to veterans.  For each card sent, Heinz will donate $1 to Wounded Warrior Project.  Bonus: Use the hashtag #OurTurnToServe on Instagram and Heinz will make an additional 57-cent donation through July 1, 2014!  For more information, or to send a card online, visit http://www.heinzketchup.com/ourturntoserve/

3. Applebee’s Thank You Movement

Now through Veteran’s Day, you can submit a message of gratitude to vets in your hometown online at http://thankyoumovement.com.  Simply enter your zip code, select the nearest Applebee’s restaurant location in your area, and type your message.  Proudly add your signature and then submit your thanks!  It will appear on the website along with all the others.  The most “thankful” neighborhood in the United States will be treated with a Gavin DeGraw concert hosted at their local Applebee’s.

4. Send “Cheer” to Military Families With Cheerios

This month, when you buy a specially marked box of Cheerios, you can help brighten the day of a military family somewhere in the United States.  The cereal boxes will feature “Cheer” postcards that, through a partnership with the USO, will be distributed to military families on bases and USO centers across the nation.  Simply cut out the postcard, add postage and your personalized message of encouragement, and mail to the pre-printed address on the card.  By supporting military families, you are also supporting their beloved service members.  For more information, visit http://www.cheerios.com/Articles/Send-Cheer-to-Military-Families

This November 11th, take the time to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our freedoms and liberties.  Take the time to reflect on the lives we have lost and express your appreciation for those who remain with us today.  Show your support for the families of those who have served and continue to serve.

Celebrate your life as an American today, and be sure to thank those who have worked so relentlessly to make it all possible.

Happy Veteran’s Day!
